Description
About Us
Dyson is a global technology enterprise. We solve the problems others choose to ignore, developing innovative products and technologies that are different, better and designed around real user needs. Our Research, Design and Development teams combine design, engineering and manufacturing expertise to take products from early concept through to production.
About the Role
Lead the Battery Systems organisation in Singapore, setting the technical direction, engineering standards and delivery model for safe, robust and competitive battery-powered products. The role combines organisational leadership with deep system-level engineering accountability across battery packs, cells, BMS hardware, charging, wireless charging, product integration, supplier/JDM delivery and lifecycle quality.
This leader will turn complex and sometimes ambiguous product needs into clear architecture, evidence-based decisions and dependable execution. They will build a resilient team, challenge weak assumptions, protect safety and compliance, and ensure that technical choices remain balanced across performance, runtime, thermal behaviour, reliability, manufacturability, cost and programme timing.
Key responsibilities
People and organisational leadership
- Lead, coach and develop a multidisciplinary Battery Systems organisation spanning battery-pack engineering, BMS hardware, power electronics, charging, wireless charging, system integration, verification and technical supplier engagement.
- Set a clear organisation vision and translate the battery strategy into capability plans, resource priorities, hiring, succession, technical leadership and sustainable workload allocation.
- Build a high-trust, high-accountability culture where engineers share evidence, challenge constructively, make risks visible and take ownership through to verified closure.
- Develop senior engineers and technical leaders who can make sound architecture decisions, lead critical reviews, mentor others and represent Battery Systems confidently across the business.
- Identify single points of dependency, skills gaps and capacity constraints early; establish credible recovery, cross-training and external-partner plans rather than relying on individual heroics.
- Create clear objectives, decision rights and operating rhythms across teams, with transparent prioritisation when demand exceeds capacity.
Battery systems strategy and architecture
- Own and evolve the battery-systems technical strategy across product categories, including pack architecture, cell and chemistry choices, BMS platforms, charger architecture, wireless charging, power budgets, interfaces and technology roadmaps.
- Lead system trade-offs across safety, performance, runtime, thermal behaviour, ageing, reliability, user experience, size, weight, cost, serviceability and manufacturing readiness.
- Ensure architecture decisions are supported by requirements, modelling, tolerance analysis, test evidence and clearly documented assumptions, limitations and residual risks.
- Drive platform reuse and modularity where this strengthens quality and speed, while preventing inappropriate reuse where product duty cycles, safety needs or interfaces differ.
- Maintain forward-looking awareness of lithium-ion and emerging chemistries, battery electronics, charging technologies, wireless power, semiconductor roadmaps and supplier capability.
Technical governance, safety and engineering quality
- Provide senior technical governance across battery packs, BMS electronics and firmware, chargers and wireless power systems, including critical design, architecture, verification and release reviews.
- Ensure product safety is designed in through robust protection concepts, fault analysis, abuse and lifecycle considerations, thermal controls, safe-state behaviour, traceable requirements and objective validation evidence.
- Own the quality of technical decision-making, ensuring teams distinguish facts from assumptions, define decision criteria, close evidence gaps and escalate unresolved safety, compliance or delivery risks promptly.
- Partner with Product Safety, Quality, Compliance and category engineering teams to support safety reviews, risk registers, certification evidence, deviations, concessions, change control and technical approvals.
- Ensure strong engineering discipline in requirements management, interface control, configuration management, design documentation, review records, Jira/Confluence/PLM traceability and lessons learned.
- Lead or support complex root-cause investigations involving field, factory or validation failures, bringing together product data, production evidence, laboratory analysis and supplier expertise to drive containment and permanent corrective action.
Portfolio delivery and product integration
- Own delivery across a significant portfolio of battery and charging programmes, ensuring clear status, milestones, owners, risks, dependencies and decisions across new-product development, lifecycle, cost-down and quality work.
- Provide decisive leadership when programmes face conflicting architecture proposals, incomplete evidence, prototype failures, late requirements or constrained resources.
- Ensure disciplined end-to-end integration between cells, battery pack, BMS hardware, chargers, product electronics, motors, thermal systems, mechanical packaging and product controls, with clear interfaces to the separately managed BMS software organisation.
- Establish credible verification and validation strategies covering normal use, foreseeable misuse, ageing, environmental exposure, manufacturing variation, interfaces and critical failure modes.
- Balance immediate programme recovery with longer-term platform integrity, technical debt reduction and capability development.
- Communicate engineering status, options, recommendation, residual risk and required decisions clearly to programme leadership and senior management.
Suppliers, JDMs and supply-chain resilience
- Lead technical relationships with battery-pack manufacturers, JDM/ODM partners, cell suppliers, BMS IC vendors, charger and wireless-power suppliers, contract manufacturers and test partners.
- Define technical due diligence and qualification expectations covering design ownership, cell selection, BMS architecture, manufacturing controls, validation capability, contamination control, process quality, traceability and corrective-action maturity.
- Build robust sourcing strategies for critical components and battery platforms, including second-source options, obsolescence, long-lead parts, qualification plans and supplier-change governance.
- Hold suppliers accountable for objective evidence, disciplined problem solving, timely technical closure and implementation of approved design or process changes.
- Partner with Procurement, Quality, Operations and Finance to align technical readiness with commercial decisions, capacity, investment, cost-down and production ramp.
Business and functional management
- Own resource and demand planning for the function, making explicit what can be committed, what requires additional capability and what must be paused or deprioritised.
- Contribute to OPEX, CAPEX, laboratory and equipment plans, ensuring investment requests are supported by clear engineering and business justification.
- Establish effective governance, dashboards, portfolio reviews and escalation routes without creating unnecessary process overhead.
- Support laboratory, HSE and competency expectations associated with battery, power-electronics and high-energy test activities.
- Represent Battery Systems in cross-functional leadership forums and build strong working relationships across Singapore, Malaysia, China and global engineering teams.
About you
You are an engineering leader who remains close enough to the technology to challenge architecture, evidence and risk. You create clarity in difficult situations, make balanced decisions and build teams that deliver without compromising safety or engineering integrity.
- A degree, or equivalent professional experience, in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Power Electronics, Mechatronics or a closely related discipline.
- Substantial industrial product-development experience in battery systems, BMS, power electronics, charging systems or similarly complex safety-critical electromechanical products.
- Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and senior individual contributors across multiple programmes.
- Strong system-level understanding of rechargeable battery packs, lithium-ion cells and chemistries, BMS hardware, sensing and protection, thermal behaviour, charging, power conversion and product integration, together with sufficient software-interface awareness to lead cross-functional system integration.
- Practical experience of architecture definition, requirements and interface management, design reviews, verification planning, failure analysis, design for manufacture and controlled release.
- Working knowledge of battery safety, compliance and transport expectations applicable to consumer products, together with the judgement to engage specialists where deeper interpretation is required.
- Experience working with battery-pack suppliers, JDM/ODM partners, cell manufacturers, semiconductor vendors and manufacturing operations, preferably across Asia.
- Ability to use evidence to resolve disagreement, communicate complex matters concisely and influence senior stakeholders without relying on authority.
- Proven ability to prioritise a demanding portfolio, allocate constrained resources transparently and maintain delivery focus without hiding risk.
