Description

The Neuroscience Program at Carleton College invites applications for a tenure-track position, to begin September 1, 2027, at the rank of assistant professor. We welcome applications from candidates with a PhD in neuroscience or a related field, particularly those with expertise in electrophysiology. Responsibilities include shared teaching of Foundations in Neuroscience with accompanying laboratory, an upper-level Neurobiology course with accompanying laboratory and a seminar in the candidate’s area of expertise. The typical teaching load is five courses spread over our three 10-week terms per year.

We seek applicants who are committed to furthering the College’s goals of providing an effective learning environment for all students. A completed Ph.D. in Neuroscience or a related field with postdoctoral experience is preferred, but applications who will complete their Ph.D. by September 2027 will be considered.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and research with undergraduate students in a liberal arts environment. Neuroscience faculty are expected to develop an active research program that engages Carleton undergraduates in scholarly contributions to their subfield. The College offers support for faculty research programs, including research facilities, student stipends and support for grant writing. In addition, support for all aspects of faculty work is provided by a college mentoring program, cohort activities for new faculty, Provost Office support, and extensive optional programming by our Perlman Center for Learning and Teaching. Carleton is committed to developing its faculty to better reflect the breadth of our student body and American society. Groups historically under-represented at Carleton are strongly encouraged to apply.

Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college with a curious and enthusiastic student body of approximately 2,000 undergraduates. We are committed to cultivating a welcoming, supportive, and diverse community, including meeting 100% of demonstrated financial need for all students, with 58% of students receiving need-based grants and scholarships. Of our domestic students, 32% identify as people of color; an additional 11% of students come from outside the United States. Located in the thriving two-college town of Northfield, Minnesota, Carleton College is forty-five miles from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, within easy reach of a vibrant metropolitan area that is home to three million people and rich cultural resources.

The Neuroscience Program at Carleton is jointly administered by faculty in Neuroscience, Biology and Psychology. We are housed in Carleton’s Integrated Science center with state-of-the-art research and teaching laboratories and equipment. For further information please consult the program website at https://apps.carleton.edu/curricular/neuroscience/ or email the director, Sarah Meerts ([email protected]).

To apply, please complete the online application at go.carleton.edu/carletonjobs. Your application should include: 1) a cover letter that also speaks to courses (including new courses) that you could envision contributing to the current curricular offerings in the program; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) a statement about teaching in an undergraduate liberal arts environment and how you would contribute to a college community that embraces a broad range of people and perspectives as one of its core values; 4) a detailed description of your plans for research with undergraduate students; and 5) After passing through an initial selection process, applicants may receive a request for the contact information for three references. We will contact your letter-writers directly to request their electronic submissions. Additional guidance in applying for this position can be found at https://www.carleton.edu/neuroscience/faculty-hiring/. Questions about the position or the application process may be directed to [email protected]. Priority consideration will be given to applications received by September 1, 2026.
