Description
There are currently two (2) Equipment Mechanic Trainee vacancies in the Fleet Services Department. This recruitment will be used to fill those vacancies and to establish a Citywide eligible list that may be used to fill future vacancies in both the Fleet Services Department and in the Mesa Fire and Medical Department (MFMD).
Those hired into a vacant Equipment Mechanic Trainee class with Fleet Services on or before 12/31/26 will receive a $2000 sign-on bonus, payable upon the successful completion of Initial Regular Probation (IRP).Additionally, all hourly employees assigned to work 2nd or 3rd shift within Fleet Services will receive a 2.5% shift incentive premium (applied to the employee's base hourly rate), in addition to the City of Mesa's Shift Differential pay.
The first review of all application will be on Monday, October 19, 2026, and biweekly thereafter until all vacancies are filled.
An Equipment Mechanic Trainee performs work in a structured training capacity to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the maintenance, diagnosis, servicing, and repair of City vehicles and equipment. Incumbents participate in a three-year training program designed to develop proficiency in the mechanical and technical aspects of automotive fleet maintenance. Under the direction and guidance of experienced personnel, incumbents receive progressive on-the-job training and perform hands-on maintenance and repair activities involving light-, medium-, and heavy-duty gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. Work includes developing the technical knowledge and mechanical skills necessary to inspect, diagnose, service, maintain, and repair a variety of fleet vehicles and equipment. Incumbents may be assigned to the Fleet Services Department or the Mesa Fire and Medical Department (MFMD), based upon position availability and selection. Work requires the progressive development of technical knowledge, mechanical skills, and proficiency in the safe and effective maintenance and repair of City vehicles and equipment throughout the training period. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
Equipment Mechanic Trainees work under the general direction of an Equipment Mechanic I, Senior Equipment Mechanic I, or Lead Fire Mechanic (by assignment) through a structured on-the-job training program. An Equipment Mechanic Trainee who successfully completes all phases of training and meets specific criteria-based promotion (CBP) requirements may progress by noncompetitive promotion to Equipment Mechanic I. Incumbents in this class must successfully complete all phases of training within the timeframes outlined in the program. An incumbent who fails to complete the training program will be transferred, demoted, or terminated. Employees in this class may be assigned to various shifts and worksites to receive training on various vehicles and equipment. Employees in this class are required to use the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow established safety procedures while performing assigned tasks. Employees in this class report directly to a Shop Foreman and/or Shop Supervisor who assigns and reviews work through spot-check observations, conferences, problems encountered, and overall results achieved. This class is FLSA nonexempt.

Minimum Qualifications Required. High School Diploma or GED. Successful completion of an industry-recognized automotive or motorcycle maintenance and repair training program, (OR) two (2) years of hands-on automotive or motorcycle maintenance and repair work experience, (OR) two (2) years of experience as a City of Mesa Equipment Repair Assistant or Preventative Maintenance Technician.
Special Requirements. Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver’s License by hire or promotion date. Must obtain three (3) ASE Automotive and Light-Truck certificates (A1-A9) within three (3) years of hire or promotion date (Fleet Services assignment). Must obtain an Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) CFD Fleet Emissions Inspector license and an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning (MVAC) 609 certification within one (1) year of hire or promotion date. Employees must provide their own hand-tools and rollaway toolbox.
Substance Abuse Testing. Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this classification, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy and procedures.
Preferred/Desirable Qualifications. Knowledge and experience using automotive electronic diagnostic equipment. Familiarization with accessing and using internet based diagnostic information.
