RaceTrac Company Overview

Job Description:

The Motor Fuel Tax Operations Manager is responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and timely maintenance of motor fuel tax rules and transaction set-up within Right Angle. The role ensures that new and existing transaction types are configured appropriately and integrate seamlessly with the company’s tax compliance systems and processes, ERP, billing, collection, and operational teams. The manager responds promptly to business requests for new transaction types, process changes, and rule updates.

Working closely with the Tax Operations Motor Fuel Manager, Accounting, ERP, and billing/collection teams, this individual develops well-supported tax positions, identifies risks and practical alternatives, and ensures tax compliance considerations are addressed before changes are implemented. The manager coordinates facts and subject-matter input, communicates requirements and decisions clearly, drives projects through implementation and validation, and elevates significant risks or decisions to senior tax leadership on a timely basis.

The role includes leadership of one to two junior team members, with responsibility for providing direction, reviewing work, developing technical and problem-solving capabilities, and ensuring accountability for timely execution. The successful candidate brings strong communication and project-management skills, intellectual curiosity, sound judgment, and a proactive desire to improve processes and add value.

What You'll Do:

  • Team Leadership and Accountability: Lead, coach, and develop analysts and senior analysts; set expectations, delegate effectively, balance capacity, provide feedback, and maintain accountability for team results.
  • Compliance Operations Management: Oversee recurring motor fuels tax compliance across entities and jurisdictions; manage calendars, resources, exceptions, filings, payments, and audit-ready support.
  • Work Product Review and Controls: Review returns, reconciliations, notices, journal entries, funding requests, workpapers, and provider deliverables; challenge assumptions, identify gaps, and ensure issues are resolved or escalated before finalization.
  • Audit and Notice Management: Manage motor fuels tax audits, examinations, notices, and information requests; coordinate resources, track deadlines, oversee document production, and communicate status, exposures, and escalations.
  • Tax Accounting, Licensing, and Data Oversight: Oversee reconciliations, accrual support, journal entries, license maintenance, tax attributes, data-quality issues, and related controls; drive timely resolution of reconciling items and recurring operational issues.
  • Provider and Resource Coordination: Coordinate outsourced compliance and advisory resources; define deliverables, monitor quality and responsiveness, address recurring issues, and maintain internal ownership of outcomes.
  • Process and Technology Execution: Support process improvements, automation, reporting enhancements, and system changes; keep procedures, controls, workpapers, and handoffs documented, repeatable, and scalable.
  • Cross-Functional Support and Communication: Partner with Supply and Distribution, Accounting, Finance, Operations, Legal, Technology, and external advisors to gather facts, resolve issues, implement tax requirements, and translate technical matters into clear actions.
  • Hands-On Problem Solving: Step into returns, data, reconciliations, systems, notices, or audit support as needed to identify root causes, remove roadblocks, and keep critical work moving.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Taxation, or a related field preferred.
  • 6-8 years of motor fuels tax, excise tax, indirect tax, accounting, or related experience preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of motor fuels or excise tax, including experience in one or more areas such as compliance, audits, licensing, exemptions, taxability, or tax research.
  • Experience translating business requirements and tax rules into system, process, or transaction set-up requirements; experience with RightAngle or comparable fuel, tax determination, ERP, or billing systems strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional tax, systems, process-improvement, regulatory-change, acquisition, or strategic-growth projects from requirements development through implementation and validation.
  • Ability to identify risks, evaluate alternatives, develop well-supported recommendations, and elevate significant tax, systems, or business decisions appropriately.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to gather facts from diverse stakeholders and communicate clear, practical, leadership-ready recommendations.
  • Experience leading, coaching, or reviewing the work of junior team members preferred.
  • Advanced Excel and analytical skills; experience with data tools, tax research platforms, tax determination systems, fuel systems, workflow tools, automation, or AI-enabled analysis preferred.
  • Ability to operate independently, manage ambiguity, coordinate multiple stakeholders, recognize escalation points, and drive complex work to resolution.
