Position
The Shipping Manager is responsible for overseeing all outbound shipping operations, ensuring plants and horticultural products are packed, labeled, and shipped accurately, on schedule, and in a manner that preserves plant health and quality. This role manages the shipping team, coordinates with growers, logistics team members, team members responsible for assembly, and ensures compliance with agricultural shipping regulations.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Plan and supervise daily shipping operations, including order picking, packing, and loading of plants and horticultural products
- Ensure proper handling techniques to minimize plant stress, damage, and spoilage during transit
- Coordinate with carriers (freight, LTL, parcel) to schedule pickups
- Manage shipping documentation, including bills of lading, phytosanitary certificates, and state/USDA compliance paperwork where required
- Supervise, train, and schedule shipping/warehouse staff
- Monitor inventory accuracy and coordinate with the growing/production team on order fulfillment timing
- Track shipment performance (on-time delivery, damage rates, customer complaints) and implementation of improvements
- Maintain compliance with safety regulations (OSHA) and proper equipment use (forklifts, pallet jacks, etc.)
- Manage seasonal volume fluctuations, especially during peak planting/shipping seasons
- Collaborate with assembly and live good sourcing team to resolve shipping delays or order issues
Requirements
Specific Skills & Requirements
- 3+ years of experience in shipping, logistics, or warehouse management (horticulture, agriculture, or perishable goods experience strongly preferred)
- Knowledge of plant handling best practices, including temperature sensitivity, moisture control, and fragility
- Familiarity with USDA/state phytosanitary shipping requirements, or willingness to learn
- Experience with shipping/logistics software and inventory management systems
- Strong leadership and team management skills
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, seasonal environment
- Forklift certification, or ability to obtain
- High school diploma required; associate or bachelor’s degree in horticulture, logistics, supply chain, or related field preferred
- Microsoft Excel capabilities
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and work in greenhouse, warehouse, or outdoor conditions with varying temperatures
- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout shift
