Site Reliability Engineer Database Platforms

Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Database Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to join our dynamic infrastructure team. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of our critical database systems, including Oracle, MongoDB, and PostgreSQL. You will leverage your expertise in database administration and backend development with Python to automate operations, optimize performance, and build resilient and scalable data solutions.

Key Responsibilities

## Database Management & Operations

• Deploy, configure, and maintain Oracle, MongoDB, and PostgreSQL database clusters across development, testing, and UAT environments.
• Ensure the reliability, availability, and performance of database systems by implementing robust monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance tuning strategies.
• Perform robust monitoring across our estate
• Conduct regular capacity planning, and perform database patching and version upgrades with minimal downtime.
• Manage schema migrations, and optimize database queries and indexing strategies.

## Automation and Tooling

• Develop and maintain automation scripts and tools using Python to streamline routine database operations, including provisioning, configuration management, and health checks.
• Build and enhance monitoring and alerting frameworks to proactively identify and address database issues before they impact users.
• Contribute to our infrastructure-as-code (IaC) practices for database environments using tools like Terraform or Ansible.

## Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)

• Define, measure, and report on Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and Service Level Indicators (SLIs) for our database services.
• Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for production incidents, and design and implement long-term preventative measures.
• Participate in a regular on-call rotation to respond to and resolve critical database incidents in a timely manner.
• Collaborate with application development teams to provide expert guidance on database best practices, schema design, and query optimization.

## Security and Compliance

• Implement and enforce database security policies, access controls, and data encryption standards.
• Ensure all database systems are compliant with industry regulations and internal security guidelines.
• Manage database user accounts, roles, and permissions, and conduct regular access reviews.

## Qualifications

## Required Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Experience: 5-7 years of professional experience in a Database Administrator, Database Engineer, or Site Reliability Engineer role
• Database Skills: Strong hands-on experience with two or more of the following database technologies:
• Oracle: (e.g., RAC, Data Guard, RMAN)
• MongoDB: (e.g., Replica Sets, Sharding, Performance Tuning)
• PostgreSQL: (e.g., Streaming Replication, Connection Pooling, Vacuuming)
• Programming Skills: Proficiency in backend scripting and automation using Python. Must have
• Technical Skills:
• Experience with database monitoring, performance tuning, and optimization.
• Solid understanding of high availability (HA), disaster recovery (DR), and backup/restore solutions.
• Strong familiarity with Linux/Unix environments and shell scripting.
• Soft Skills:
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment.

## Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with cloud-native database services (e.g., AWS RDS, Aurora, DocumentDB, Azure SQL, Google Cloud SQL).
• Knowledge of infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tools like Terraform or Ansible.
• Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and container orchestration platforms like Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices.
• Experience with enterprise monitoring and logging tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, or the ELK Stack.
• Relevant industry certifications in Oracle, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, or cloud platforms.
