Overview
The Family Office oversees the tax affairs of a family with interests in real estate, operating businesses, private investments, trusts, and philanthropic entities. The Family Office operates in a demanding environment and requires the utmost confidentiality and discretion, clarity in communication and professionalism, with a view towards short and long-term planning.
Responsibilities
The Chief Tax Officer (CTO) will serve as the in-house tax officer reporting directly to the VP of Tax, of the associated majority owned business and is responsible for all aspects of tax planning, compliance, structuring, and advisory for the family, related entities, trusts, and investments. The individual will work closely with the family office CFO. This individual will manage external advisors, drive tax-efficient / advantaged strategies, and ensure compliance across federal, state, and international jurisdictions.
The ideal candidate is a well-seasoned advisor, technically strong, detail-oriented, proactive, and able to operate in a highly confidential environment with complex entity structures and transactions. They must exhibit a comprehensive knowledge of the tax issues facing high net worth individuals and their families, while also having a strong working knowledge of Trusts, Foundations, C-corps, S-corps, and Partnerships.
They will support the business founder as a trusted advisor providing tax consulting and advisory services, as well as other duties that may arise. This candidate will be responsible for implementing consulting/planning strategies through the timely delivery of advice which includes planning and scenario modeling, projections, estimates, and the filing of tax returns.
- Tax Planning & Advisory
Originate and lead comprehensive tax planning across the family’s entities, operating businesses, trusts, investment vehicles, and philanthropic structures.
Conduct timely and comprehensive tax research on complex projects affecting individual and closely held companies and investments.
Maintain excellent communication skills, both written and oral, to build relationships with founder and founder’s family as well as Sr. Executives at the majority owned business.
Analyze and advise on the tax implications of investment activities, real estate transactions, private equity/VC deals, and multi-state operations.
Identify and execute tax-efficient strategies for wealth transfer, succession planning, and asset protection.
Support structuring of new entities, joint ventures, partnerships, and investment holdings.
Advise on charitable planning, DAFs, private foundations, and compliance with excise tax regimes.
- Special Projects
Participate in evaluation and due diligence in acquisitions and dispositions of business ventures and properties.
Spearhead tax modeling of liquidity events including M&A transactions and capitalizations.
Implement and deploy technology tools to streamline processes including tax return compliance filings.
Construct forecast models for general planning and specific transactions / events.
- Tax Compliance & Oversight
- Review individual, trust, gift, and private foundation tax returns, estimated tax filings and extension calculations.Resolve federal, state, and local tax inquiries and audit requests.Effectively manage workflow and teams to meet internal and external deadlines.
- Trusts, Estates & Wealth Transfer
- Work with estate planning council on trust structuring, valuations, gifting strategies, GRATs, IDGTs, QSBS planning, and other advanced techniques.
- Partnership & Entity-Level Expertise
- Evaluate partnership allocations (including §704(b), 704(c), capital accounts, basis tracking).
- Oversee K-1s, partnership reorganizations, redemptions, and buy/sell transactions.
- Review depreciation strategies, cost segregation opportunities, and real estate tax incentives.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting with a minimum of 10+ years of individual taxation experience focused on high-net-worth individuals and their related entities.
CPA, JD required.
High degrees of discretion, integrity, and judgment
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
Advanced trust and estate planning and compliance experience, including for example gift tax returns, private foundations, Spousal Lifetime Access Trusts, sales to a defective trust, Grantor Retained Annuity Trusts, and income tax planning with out-of-state trusts.
Preferred
Master’s degree in taxation for CPAs, or LLM in Taxation for JDs
Strong real estate experience
Prior Family Office Experience
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Ability to take information from various sources and relate them together in an organized and understandable way.
Ability to step back and see the whole picture, without getting stuck in the details.
Quickly understand the implications of various tax issues and planning ideas that arise, distill them and cogently convey the risks/rewards of those tax issues and planning ideas in an easily understandable manner.
Flexibility in adapting processes to meet unique needs as they arise.
Proactively identify, analyze, and solve problems with little oversight, but always saving support for how you arrived at the solution so it can be verified.
Actively participate and share ideas in a constructive and positive manner in various meetings.
Ability to handle and maintain extreme confidentiality with founder’s information and records.
Some travel required (less than 50%) to meet with founder in person.
