Description
Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated Technical Project Coordinator to support the development of an agentic modeling framework for complex scientific and national security challenges. Working at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), computational modeling, and biosecurity, the successful candidate will coordinate technical and project activities across a multidisciplinary team of computer scientists and researchers.
A key focus of this role will be supporting the development of the Pandemic Preparedness Engine for Disease X, an agentic system integrating AI-driven modeling and predictive capabilities to advance preparedness for emerging infectious disease threats.
The Technical Project Coordinator will support project execution, monitor research milestones, communicate progress and risks, and assist with the implementation of established biosecurity safeguards and risk-mitigation strategies. Working under the guidance of project leadership and subject-matter experts, this individual will help facilitate collaboration, maintain project documentation, and support the responsible development and deployment of advanced AI systems for biosecurity applications.
Position Responsibilities Include:
- Project Coordination: Support technical activities across a multidisciplinary research team by maintaining project schedules, tracking milestones, deliverables, dependencies, and action items, and escalating potential delays or risks to project leadership.
- Technical Communication and Reporting: Serve as an initial point of contact for routine project inquiries, coordinate status updates and reporting requirements, document technical progress, and assist in translating established program objectives into actionable research activities.
- AI/ML Technical Support: Apply knowledge of large language models (LLMs), AI-based prediction, and computational modeling to support the evaluation, application, and coordination of AI/ML approaches for complex scientific challenges, including the Pandemic Preparedness Engine for Disease X.
- Biosecurity Coordination: Serve as an initial point of contact for routine biosecurity considerations, collaborating with researchers, cybersecurity personnel, and project leadership to identify, document, and communicate potential risks associated with advanced AI and modeling capabilities.
- Risk Mitigation and Compliance: Support the implementation and documentation of established biosecurity safeguards, risk assessments, review processes, and mitigation measures under the guidance of subject-matter experts. Coordinate biosecurity reviews and track related action items to ensure timely follow-up.
- Project Documentation: Assist with the preparation, organization, and review of technical reports, presentations, publications, and software-dissemination materials under the direction of technical staff.
Position Requirements
- PA2: Minimum of a Bachelor's degree with 2+ years of related experience, or equivalent
- Project coordination experience
- Familiarity with large language modeling and foundation models
- Familiarity with state of the art methods in artificial intelligence
- Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity and teamwork
