General/Position Summary

The Senior Manager, G&A Functions, is a key member of Vertex's Financial Planning & Analysis team, providing financial direction and strategic insight including identification of key value drivers and business KPIs, helping functions deliver their short-term and long-term goals and influencing strategy.  This role will help drive our annual budget process and will partner closely with functional teams to drive the financial performance management process for responsible functions (objective setting, budget vs. actuals, etc.), including the monthly forecast process, with a focus on influencing business operations and decisions through an understanding of the key drivers of short-term performance and communicating the range of possible outcomes.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Business Partnering & Stakeholder Management

• Serve as the strategic finance partner to leaders across assigned G&A functions, building trusted relationships and providing financial counsel, decision support, and constructive challenge to help achieve short- and long-term objectives.

Financial Planning, Analysis & Performance Management

• Lead the annual budget, forecast, and long-range planning processes for assigned functions, translating business strategies and operating plans into clear financial requirements, scenarios, and resource-allocation recommendations.

• Drive financial performance management through monthly and quarterly reviews of actual results, forecasts, and key performance indicators; identify underlying drivers, explain variances, and maintain transparent views of risks and opportunities.

• Partner with Human Resources and functional leaders on workforce planning, headcount forecasting, vacancy management, and organizational changes, ensuring associated financial impacts are accurately reflected in plans and forecasts.

Reporting, Close & Financial Controls

• Establish and maintain clear, scalable reporting and analytics that provide leaders with timely insight into spending trends, business drivers, forecast accuracy, and progress against functional objectives.

• Partner with Accounting and functional stakeholders to support monthly and quarterly close activities for assigned functions, including accruals, purchase-order and commitment reviews, variance analysis, and compliance with applicable internal controls.

Communication & Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Prepare and present concise financial updates that synthesize complex information, highlight key decisions and trade-offs, and recommend actions to address emerging risks and opportunities.

• Collaborate across the CFO organization, including Corporate Finance, Accounting and other finance teams, to align assumptions, strengthen controls, share best practices, and deliver efficient end-to-end processes.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement

• Identify and support continuous-improvement opportunities by simplifying processes and appropriately leveraging automation, AI, analytics, and visualization tools to improve forecast accuracy, reporting efficiency, and decision support.

Required Education Level

  • Bachelors Degree in Finance or Accounting

Required Experience

·         Typically requires 8 years of progressive experience in finance roles (FP&A, business partnering, or related areas) demonstrating strong technical and analytical skills and a proven track record of success working in a team-based environment or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

·         Biotechnology/Pharmaceutical industry experience preferred

Required Knowledge/Skills

Core Financial & Analytical Expertise

  • Advanced financial planning and analysis expertise, including budgeting, forecasting, long-range planning, management reporting, scenario analysis, and financial modeling.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize large and complex data sets, identify key value drivers, challenge assumptions, develop pragmatic recommendations under uncertainty, and drive ideas through successful implementation.
  • Strong understanding of accounting and finance principles, including accruals, operating expense management, variance analysis, financial controls, and the monthly and quarterly close process.

Business Partnering & Communication

  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, understand functional strategies and operating models, and translate business priorities into actionable financial insights and resource-allocation recommendations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly to finance and non-finance audiences.
  • Strong stakeholder-management and influencing skills, with a demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships, work effectively with senior leaders, peers, and junior team members, align diverse perspectives, and influence decisions across functions and organizational levels.

Technology, Innovation & Continuous Improvement

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint; experience with Hyperion, Oracle EPM, SAP BPC, or a comparable planning platform.  Experience with business-intelligence and visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI is preferred.
  • Continuous improvement mindset with demonstrated interest in process simplification, automation, AI-enabled analytics, data quality, and emerging finance technologies; experience with lean tools or lean philosophies is preferred.
