The Master’s primary responsibility is the safety of passengers and crew, safety of the vessel and the protection of the environment. Should the vessel become endangered, the Master must use all available recourses to minimize the impact to persons, property, and the environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- The Master must ensure that the bridge operations are conducted in accordance with the Navigation Standards Manual, and that all Navigators are familiar with its content and that the system is being followed at all times. The Master shall ensure that all laws, regulations and company policies and programs are followed.
- The Master is responsible for the enforcement of the company’s Safety and Environmental Protection Policy ensuring compliance with international, national, and local environmental requirements applicable to the ship’s operations. The Environmental Officer and the three department heads: the Staff Captain (responsible for the Deck Department), the Chief Engineer (responsible for the Engine Department), and the Hotel Director (responsible for the Hotel Department), assist the Master in meeting these environmental responsibilities.
- In the event of environmental incidents, accidents, or non-conformities with the company’s environmental policy or applicable environmental regulatory requirements, the Master is to ensure that the proper international, national, and/or local authorities have been notified, as appropriate or required, and that the proper corporate officers have been informed always in accordance with the SMS (Safety & Environmental Management System) guidelines.
- The Master is also responsible for ensuring that the crew receives proper training and demonstrates proficiency in the operation of the lifesaving, firefighting, security, navigation and environmental systems. In addition, the Master is to promote effective communications between the ship and corporate offices as well as with shore side government agencies as appropriate.
- The Master shall ensure that the ship's maintenance program meets or exceeds the company’s requirements or other regulatory authorities. The Master shall follow up on maintenance by occasionally auditing the use of the AMOS, and the Master shall organize meetings focused on maintenance and cooperate closely with superintendents, shipyard representatives, repair teams, etc. The Master shall ensure that inspections of the entire ship are carried out on a regular basis, and that reports are being filed in accordance with the SMS requirements.
- The Master is responsible for the implementation of the accident/incident reporting system and the Master shall support the shipboard management team in any investigation monitoring the progress through the Staff Captain, particularly as to serious matters.
- The Master is responsible to ensure that all officers joining the ship have the proper licenses corresponding to the requirements of the flag state. The Master may designate any officer to examine the records on his/her behalf.
- The Master shall give orders to the appropriate department head, Watch keeping Officers or other officers, keeping the Staff Captain advised of these orders.
- The Master has a special responsibility for training the Staff Captain in maneuvering the ship, to qualify him to take over the Command of the ship when that is needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
- Must be familiar with the Safety and Environmental Protection Policy and the SMS, and carry out the policies and procedures appropriate for his/her position.
- The Master is the Owner’s representative and the ultimate authority onboard. The Master is charged to carry out the company's policies and to comply with all applicable national and international laws and regulations. This authority vested to the Master by the government of the Flag State.
- The Master is expected to evaluate his/her team and make suggestions to the company of individuals that work well together.
- The Master shall administer an employee appraisal/evaluation and development process, for promotion/ transfer and/or performance improvement.
- The Master shall maintain a high standard of discipline onboard using any lawful method deemed necessary for a given situation. The Master shall administer a fair disciplinary process and promote a two way communication process.
- The Master shall maintain a well-trained staff/team and participate in various shipboard meetings. The Master shall keep employee morale high by assuring new employees, communicating the company’s rules and regulations, setting a high behavioral standard, and conducting employee recreational functions. The Master shall promote the welfare and well-being of the crew, by being attentive to their environment and ensuring each enjoys the privileges to which they are entitled. The master shall use periodic inspection rounds as an opportunity to strengthen the personal contact between himself/herself and the crew.
- The Master shall maintain a world class standard of service to the passengers by:
- Creating a Positive Atmosphere' onboard the vessel, being visible to guests at the beginning of each voyage and throughout the voyage, recognizing Repeat Guests in as many ways as possible, setting high expectations with the ship's employees, being an outstanding example for the employees to follow: dress, conversation, attitude, behavior, etc.
- The Master shall closely monitor "unusual situations" that may affect other guests. Handle disruptive guests quickly and discreetly, listen closely to concerns and be flexible when handling each situation.
- The Master shall entrust junior officers often with leadership responsibilities to provide the opportunity for improvement. The Master shall ensure, that the crew understands, that a successful operation depends on each person striving to do his or her best.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Fidelio is strongly preferred.
Intermediate to Advanced knowledge and experience using Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) is required. - Intermediate verbal and writing skills in at least one other language such as German, Spanish, French or Italian is preferred.
- The incumbent must be able to work in a multi-cultural environment; also, must be able to adjust to changes in schedules, assignments and deadlines.
- Intermediate to Advanced level English verbal and writing skills, including the proper use of English grammar is required.
EDUCATION
- High School Diploma or Foreign Equivalent is required.
- Degree from a recognized maritime educational institution that qualifies them for an Unlimited Masters License is required.
