Description

The Health and Human Services Department is currently advertising for a Public Health Technician to join their team.

This position will remain open until filled.  Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to apply early as the posting may be closed once a satisfactory candidate pool is identified.

The purpose of this position is to promote community health and wellness programs, provide bi-lingual services to Public Health clients, and assist with daily operation of the Public Health Unit. The work is performed under the supervision of the Health Officer/Public Health Supervisor. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily and in a timely manner. The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.

Assist with the daily operations of the Public Health Unit, including scheduling appointments, answering calls, front office coverage and coordinating services for residents.

Monitor Public Health inbox in email, mail, and fax.

Interprets/translates for Spanish speaking residents in person and during phone/video conversations for all Public Health programs including communicable diseases investigations, chronic disease and injury preventions, Environmental Public Health, Maternal and Child Health, Community Health Assessment/Community Health Improvement Plan, and Access to/Linkage to Care.

Manages and provides education for Safe Sleep and Car Seat Programs, including crib and car seat procurement and distribution.  Maintains National Child Passenger Safety Certification.

Represent Public Health at Safe Kid and other regional or community meetings as assigned by the Health Officer.

Participate in Emergency Preparedness program activities as assigned by the Health Officer.

Assists in clinics and appointments including immunization Clinics, Dental clinics, and WIC appointments.

Act as access to, or linkage to care as needed by identifying appropriate referrals for residents.

Manage social media accounts, such as Facebook. 

Develop and manage Public Health front desk television display. Inform IT of any monthly Public Health awareness topics for courthouse television display. 

Develop and draft Newsletters, brochures, posters and other outreach materials to promote Public Health topics and programs. 

Conducts communicable disease investigations and follow-ups assigned by Public Health Nurse and perform such activities under the direction of Public Health Nurse.

Attend Public Health outreach events as assigned by the Health Officer. 

Interpreting for Environmental Health Inspections and follow-up visits as needed.

Receive and process water samples submitted by the community. Assist in the certification and operation of the Water Lab.

Other duties pertaining to Public Health programs as assigned by the Health Officer.



Ability to classify, compute, and tabulate data and information, following a prescribed plan requiring the exercise of some judgment. Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure, and sort information. Ability to assemble, copy, record, and transcribe data and information.

Ability to advise and provide interpretation to others how to apply policies, procedures, and standards to specific situations.

Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference data and information such as clinic attendance records, program forms, correspondence, computer software operating manuals, schedules, WIC handbook, and records. 

Ability to communicate with clients orally and in writing in both English and Spanish fluently.  

Ability to effectively communicate with the general public, Public Health personnel, other health care professionals, and vendors.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

Ability to use functional reasoning in performing semi-routine functions involving standardized work with some choice of action.

Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties, which may be subject to frequent change.


Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor’s degree is preferred. Fluency in speaking and writing Spanish is required, ability to work with people of all ages from various ethnic backgrounds. Minimum 2 years of experience interpreting for the Hispanic population in a healthcare setting or equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities. Competency in Microsoft Word is required. Certified medical interpreter or completed certified medical interpreter course within 6 months of hire required. National Child Passenger Safety Certification within one year of employment.  Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, 700, and 800 certifications within one year of hire. Successful completion of blood borne pathogen course required upon hire. Successful completion of any WIC specific training as directed before any work with WIC.  A valid motor vehicle operator’s license and available means of transportation required.
