The Director of Housekeeping is a visible, hands-on leader who develops high-performing teams, maintains exceptional guestroom and public-area standards, and effectively manages labor, supplies, inventory, and departmental expenses. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong operational knowledge, attention to detail, financial awareness, and a genuine passion for creating memorable experiences for both guests and team members.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and daily leadership for Housekeeping, Public Areas, Turndown, and Laundry operations.

  • Recruit, train, coach, schedule, and develop managers, supervisors, room attendants, housepersons, public-area attendants, and laundry team members.

  • Establish clear expectations and hold leaders and team members accountable for quality, productivity, attendance, safety, and service.

  • Conduct daily briefings, departmental meetings, training sessions, and performance discussions.

  • Create a positive and inclusive work environment that promotes teamwork, recognition, professional development, and associate engagement.

  • Develop succession plans and identify opportunities for internal advancement.

  • Ensure departmental leaders are visible in the operation and actively support the team during high-volume periods.

Guestroom and Public-Area Standards

  • Ensure guestrooms, suites, public areas, offices, back-of-house spaces, and other assigned areas meet established cleanliness and presentation standards.

  • Conduct regular guestroom, public-area, linen-room, laundry, and storage-area inspections.

  • Establish consistent inspection procedures and document deficiencies, corrective actions, and follow-up.

  • Ensure rooms are cleaned, inspected, and released according to hotel occupancy demands and established check-in times.

  • Monitor VIP arrivals, special requests, room preferences, turndown service, and other personalized guest arrangements.

  • Partner with Front Office to manage room status, early arrivals, late departures, out-of-order rooms, and guest priorities.

  • Respond promptly and professionally to guest concerns involving cleanliness, room condition, lost items, or housekeeping service.

  • Identify recurring service or quality concerns and implement sustainable solutions.

Operational Management

  • Develop daily staffing plans based on occupancy, arrivals, departures, stayover service, group activity, and business levels.

  • Monitor room assignments, cleaning progress, inspection status, productivity, and room availability throughout the day.

  • Maintain accurate room-status communication between Housekeeping, Front Office, Engineering, and Reservations.

  • Establish and maintain cleaning schedules for guestrooms, public areas, deep cleaning, preventive maintenance, and special projects.

  • Coordinate room maintenance and repair needs with Engineering and verify completed work.

  • Oversee the proper handling, documentation, storage, and return of lost-and-found items.

  • Ensure all departmental equipment, carts, closets, pantries, and storage areas are clean, organized, secure, and properly maintained.

  • Participate in operational meetings, executive meetings, forecasting discussions, and hotel planning activities.

  • Serve as Manager on Duty when assigned.

Financial and Productivity Management

  • Prepare and manage the annual Housekeeping and Laundry operating budgets.

  • Monitor labor costs, payroll, overtime, productivity, supplies, linen replacement, uniforms, equipment, and contracted services.

  • Review financial statements, forecasts, and departmental performance reports.

  • Adjust staffing levels according to occupancy and business demands while maintaining service and quality standards.

  • Establish productivity expectations and evaluate performance without compromising safety, cleanliness, or the guest experience.

  • Identify cost-saving opportunities while protecting the hotel’s service standards and physical assets.

  • Review purchasing activity and ensure expenditures remain within approved budget guidelines.

  • Provide accurate information for monthly forecasts, variance explanations, and capital-planning needs.

Linen, Laundry, Supplies, and Inventory

  • Direct the purchasing, receiving, distribution, storage, and control of guest supplies, cleaning products, linen, terry, uniforms, and equipment.

  • Maintain readiness for brand inspections, health inspections, safety audits, and ownership reviews.

  • Introduce processes, technology, and training that improve communication, room readiness, productivity, and quality.

  • Collaborate with hotel leaders to support sustainability initiatives, including water conservation, waste reduction, linen-reuse programs, and responsible chemical usage.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
