UW ICA Facilities has an outstanding opportunity for Maintenance Mechanic 2 to join their team.
About this Opportunity
Reporting to the Maintenance Mechanic Lead, the Maintenance Mechanic 2 is responsible for keeping UW Athletics' facilities and specialized equipment, safe, functional, and game-ready through preventative maintenance, repairs, and custom shop fabrication. By setting up and supporting venues for competitions and events (and leading staff in doing so), this person directly enables the department's 650+ student-athletes and 22 sports programs to train and compete without disruption. The role also carries an essential-function designation and a strong compliance focus, so reliability and adherence to University, NCAA, and State rules are central to its impact.
The workstation for this role will reside in Alaska Airlines Arena. This role is not eligible for telework. This role will work 5 8-hour days Monday-Friday.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform preventative maintenance on mechanical and athletic-specific equipment, including retractable bleachers, basketball support systems, and lighting fixtures. (25%)
- Repair facility fixtures and equipment, including lockers, doors, countertops, and cabinetry. (25%)
- Fabricate materials and equipment in the shop to fulfill ICA-specific requests. (10%)
- Install graphics and wall-mounted items such as pictures, whiteboards, and cabinets. (10%)
- Set up, support, and clean up venues for sporting events, special events, and other ICA activities, and lead staff in event preparation. (25%)
- Participate in required rules education programs and follow University, NCAA, Conference, and State compliance requirements. (5%)
This position manages temporary labor for facility cleanups, pressure washing, blowing, and event coverage.
Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

- Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a journey worker, OR full-journey status in a union; OR four years' applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience maintaining or repairing athletic facility equipment, such as retractable bleachers, basketball support systems, or gymnasium and arena hardware.
- Experience with finish carpentry, cabinetry, or millwork fabrication in a shop setting.
- Experience setting up and supporting events at a stadium, arena, or similar venue, including working to tight turnaround times.
- Experience leading or coordinating the work of others, such as crews, student workers, or event staff Familiarity with NCAA or collegiate athletics environments, or with working in a compliance-driven setting
Working Conditions
- Work is performed on-site at ICA facilities and workshops; no telework.
- Regular use of hand and power tools and shop equipment.
- Physical work such as lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, climbing, and standing for extended periods.
- Work on or around retractable bleachers, overhead lighting, and other elevated or mechanical equipment.
- Exposure to noise, dust, and materials typical of a workshop and repair environment.
- Work in both indoor and outdoor venues, with exposure to varying weather.
- Schedule may include evenings, weekends, or holidays to support events.
- This position performs essential services and may be required to work during any period of declared suspended operation.
About the Team
The Maintenance Mechanic 2 joins a hard-working, detail-oriented team that keeps ICA's athletic venues and equipment safe, functional, and event-ready. Our team members get along well, take pride in dependable work, and have the University's best interests at heart. You will work closely with coaches, event staff, and other ICA personnel, and lead staff during venue preparation for sporting and special events.
