Job Description:

Facilities Development and Management is seeking a Construction Inspector whose primary responsibility is to perform building inspections for renovation and new construction projects to ensure compliance with appropriate building codes and approved construction documents.


Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and one (1) year of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Perform routine and minor commercial field inspections.
  • Assists Senior Inspectors on Projects.
  • Research applicable building codes to substantiate field directives and identify code-compliant efficiencies in construction methods and procedures.
  • Observes commercial construction work in progress to ensure conformance with applicable code requirements and acceptable standards of workmanship.                     
  • Prepare reports and inspection documentation, maintain all required records
  • Conduct field/site visits.                                                               
  • Inspect construction projects to identify construction deficiencies                     
  • Consult with department staff, architects, engineers, designers, and contractors concerning deficiencies with structural and non-structural requirements.                         
  • Review existing mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems for code safety requirements.  
  • Consult with customers to explain codes and regulations, review plans prior to submittal.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives as well as policies and procedures as directed by the Building Official. 
  • Attend various project meetings to provide information on ASU’s building code requirements, policies and procedures.                                                                      
  • Prepare regularly scheduled and Ad Hoc reports.                                              
  • Interpret codes and regulations related to plans review and construction projects; research and bring forward recommendations for updates.                                       
  • May review building plans to determine code compliance and compliance with applicable laws, codes and standards under the jurisdiction of ASU.            
  • May approve or deny plans as appropriate, sign off on approved plans and legal documents.

 

Shift Hours: Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM

 

While standard hours are Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, schedules may adjust due to weather, seasonal heat protocols, urgent field calls, or contractor scheduling requirements.

 

This position is based at ASU’s Tempe campus but will require working from other campuses depending on operational needs.  

 

 

Salary Range: $72,000 – $79,000. ASU offers a comprehensive overall compensation plan with the State of Arizona.

 

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering or Architecture
  • Related experience in construction management, inspections, or work in one of the four major trades: plumbing, mechanical, electrical, or building construction.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Building Codes, ADA and NFPA standards.
  • Evidence of Building Code certification from the International Code Council or the ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Experience in performing plan reviews for conformance to building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing codes for commercial projects.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook, Smartsheet).
  • Effective communication skills

 

Working Environment:

  • Activities are performed in a variety of internal and external settings.
  • Able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to varying degrees dependent on the environment you are in for extended periods including but not limited to; Hardhats, Eye Protection, Reflective Vests, Protective footwear, Gloves and Respirators.
  • Access various construction sites and campus tunnels to perform visual construction inspections which involves stooping, walking on uneven surfaces, kneeling, crawling in confined spaces, climbing stairs and ladders, working on scaffolding and standing and walking for long periods of time in extreme summer temperatures.
  • Activities involve accessing areas such as above and below grade floors and tunnels using ladders, lifts and other OSHA approved means.
  • Activities require lifting, bending and carrying objects up to 50 pounds. Participate in field work which requires exposure to dirt, dust, and inclement weather.
  • Climb stairs, ladders and scaffolding at heights above thirty (30) feet.
  • May also perform some activities in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Position requires the ability to drive University Vehicles.

LOCATIONS:

This position is located at the University Services Building, 1551 S. Rural Road, Tempe, AZ (on Rural Road south of Apache Blvd) but will require working from other campuses depending on operational needs.

 

This position requires that you must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment.  Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39-month period from date of hire.

 

Respirator Fit Test

Candidates must successfully complete a pre-employment respiratory clearance questionnaire and respirator fit test as a condition of employment.

Driving Requirement:

This position may require driving. Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.
