Description

The Department of Classical Studies in the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Richmond invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in the 2027-2028 academic year.

We are seeking a scholar with an active program of research in ancient medicine and a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and mentorship. Areas of expertise in which we are particularly interested include, but are not limited to: Hellenistic Egypt, religious ritual and magic, gender and sexuality, race and ethnic identity, disability studies, reception of Hippocratic Corpus and Galen, and papyrology. Research programs involving digital humanities are especially welcome.

In addition to a course focused on the history of ancient medicine (CLSC 210), the successful candidate will teach Greek and Latin language courses and mentor undergraduate student research. The candidate will be able to develop new courses that enhance the department’s existing curricular offerings and can further support our General Education curriculum, the Web of Inquiry, including opportunities to contribute to the University’s interdisciplinary programs. The regular teaching load will be five courses per academic year across two semesters.

The Department of Classical Studies strives to sustain an engaging and collaborative environment that welcomes students from all backgrounds into the study of the languages, material cultures, histories, and receptions of the ancient Mediterranean world, with special emphasis on ancient Greek and Latin. The successful candidate will broaden the range of scholarly specialties, viewpoints, and experiences represented within the department.  We are interested in applicants who have a commitment to creating inclusive learning environments, mentoring students from a range of backgrounds and experiences, and generating student interest in Classics.

A Ph.D. in Classics or a related field is required by the time of appointment.

Applicants should apply online at https://jobs.richmond.edu and submit as separate .pdf files: a curriculum vitae, cover letter (two pages maximum), teaching portfolio, research statement, and a sample or excerpt of published or unpublished scholarship (15-25 pages). The teaching portfolio should be a single.pdf file including a one-page statement of teaching philosophy, list of courses taught and the applicant’s role in each course, teaching evaluations from at least one course (if available), and a sample syllabus for a Greek or Latin course (intermediate or upper level). The research statement (two pages maximum) should describe the applicant’s current research, future research plans, and potential contributions to undergraduate research and the intellectual life of the University of Richmond.

Candidates for this position may be asked, at a later date, to provide the names and contact information for three references who will be asked to submit letters of recommendation. Review of applications will commence October 14, 2026 and continue until the position is filled. Please contact Elizabeth Baughan ([email protected]) with any questions. For more information on the Classical Studies Department and its programs, please visit classics.richmond.edu.

The starting salary for the position is budgeted at $85,000. Compensation is determined by the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, and skills.
