Our elite Emergency Management Division seeks a mature, responsible, and qualified individual to fill the highly sensitive role of 911 Dispatcher in the Tinley Park 911 Dispatch Center.

This 911 Dispatcher is primarily responsible for effectively communicating with the public in emergency situations while operating the Village-wide enhanced 911 Emergency Communications System as they receive, evaluate, process, and dispatch incoming emergency and non-emergency calls for Police, Fire, and EMS to persons requesting assistance. 

This position will assess situations quickly and accurately using appropriate judgment to determine response requirements and relative priorities of situations and use multi-tasking skills to dispatch units in accordance with established procedures. In addition, they must be able to provide emergency medical dispatch (EMD) instructions over the phone and multi-task effectively to obtain information from all relevant sources, prioritize incoming calls, radio traffic, and walk-in traffic for the duration of assigned shift.    

This position will also monitor all police, fire and EMS radio traffic including transmitting and retrieve information through in-house, local, county, state, and federal law enforcement data networks in addition to operating the Telephone Device for Hearing Impaired (TDD).  Additionally, will relay information and message to and from emergency sites to law enforcement agencies and to other individuals or groups requiring notification and accurately record information on a variety of forms, logs, and computer screens as dictated by department’s established policies and procedures, 

This important role will also maintain awareness of field unit activities within the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, LEADS/NCIC, and other computer-based programs for taking complaints, maintaining status and location of units in the field, retrieve and transmit information concerning public safety such as wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, hazardous street and weather conditions to officers in the field.

High School Diploma with a minimum of one (1) to three (3) years of dispatch or related public service or emergency management experience.  Experience in the techniques and practices of public safety communications environment, including the transmission, broadcasting, switching, control, and operation of telecommunications systems and computerized databases is highly preferred. 

Knowledge of basic dispatch codes, standard industry abbreviations, and terminology commonly used by emergency medical services, fire agencies, and law enforcement agencies is required.  Excellent customer service, communication (both verbal and written), and interpersonal skills are necessary, as well as skill in effectively dealing and communicating with people and highly stressful situations which may be for an extended period of time.  

Must obtain Law Enforcement Agencies Data System (LEADS) within two (2) weeks of hire. Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Certification is required within six (6) months of hire. CPR/AED certification is required within six (6) months of hire.

The ideal candidate will have prior emergency dispatching experience and must possess an outstanding work ethic, demonstrate an ability to work well under pressure, exercise good judgement, make sound decisions, follow written and oral instructions, establish priorities and react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. They will have the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, pay attention to detail, understand and utilize proper law enforcement language, demonstrate punctuality and accept the department’s ruling regarding mandatory overtime and recall of emergency duty or other special circumstances, assess situations quickly and accurately, use appropriate judgment when responding to incident reports, including emergency and life threatening public safety calls for service,  operate 9-1-1 system equipment, telephones, radio communications and Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
This position standard schedule is 4 days on, 3 days off.  This includes two (2) - eight (8) hour shifts and two (2) - twelve (12) hour shifts each week.  

Currently seeking to fill NIGHT Shift;  11:00pm - 7:00am and 11:00pm - 11:00am. Shift subject to change based on operational needs and annul shift picks are by seniority each November for the upcoming year. Must be able to work on any shift/any day during initial training period.
