The Senior Library Assistant (part-time) will primarily facilitate and deliver tours related to San Leandro History to 3rd and 4th grade classes, including scheduling classes for tours, setting up for the tours at the History Museum, delivering tour content, managing students and chaperones during the tours, and updating tour content as needed to meet changing curriculum needs. The position will also assist with planning and leading other programs for youth and working at public service desks.
Under direction, performs a variety of administrative, clerical, and paraprofessional library duties in support of the City’s Library, branches and/or San Leandro History Museum/Casa Peralta; assists with monitoring and oversight of a branch library, a major function at the main library, and/or museum; interacts with patrons to provide information and assistance related to reference materials; participates in, plans, promotes, and conducts library activities, programs, and services; provides lead direction to and participates in the work of less experienced staff and volunteers; and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the advanced-level classification in the Library Assistant series responsible for performing the most complex work assigned to the series. Incumbents regularly work on tasks which are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment. Positions in the classification rely on experience and judgment to perform assigned duties. Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to deliver services. Work is typically reviewed upon completion for soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED
Exercises technical and functional direction over and provides training to less experienced staff and volunteers. Receives direction from assigned supervisory or management personnel.
EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The typical job functions of the classification may include, but are not limited to, the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity.
- Assists with monitoring and oversight of a branch library, museum, or a major function of the main library such as circulation and technical processing; supports and provides customer service and library and museum programs facilitation.
- Interacts with and serves the needs of patrons and provides information; oversees and renders circulation services; assists with technical support and troubleshooting; receives complaints and determines appropriate action to remedy complaints.
- Provides reference and information assistance to patrons; locates books and other materials; instructs and assists patrons in locating information and materials utilizing a variety of media including the internet.
- Provides and participates in library and/or museum activities, programs and services; determines and recommends needed supplies, equipment, and other materials; conducts and/or assists with library and museum tours.
- Promotes interest in library and museum programs through publicity, bulletin board displays, program brochures, newsletters, cooperation with various schools, community groups, and public contacts; speaks before students, business and civic organizations, and other groups.
- Enforces library and museum policies and procedures; surveys facilities for cleanliness and safety; contacts appropriate staff and/or departments to correct/resolve issues.
- Assists with library and museum operations, opening, set up and clean up of rooms and events, and closing duties.
- Assists with schedules, assigns work to, oversees, and participates in the work of staff performing customer service, administrative, and clerical duties in support of the City’s Libraries and museum; assists with overseeing the workflow of lower-level staff, volunteers, and/or work unit; monitors that work is completed on time and is consistent with the work quality standards.
- Assists with and participates in the training of lower-level staff and volunteers; provides feedback related to training and performance.
- Provides input on budget allocations for various library and museum programs and areas; monitors expenditures as requested.

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would most likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, supplemented by college level coursework or specialized training in library information science, history, communications, education, social sciences, or related field.
Experience: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible library or administrative support, teaching, child development, community organizing, or related experience.
