Purpose of Position 
The Parks Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing all functions necessary for the maintenance of the Village's Parks, greenways, roadway boulevards, building grounds, and park facilities.

Position Accountability
General day-to-day supervision, administrative direction, and performance evaluation shall be received from the Park Maintenance Supervisor.

Supervision Exercised
The Parks Maintenance Technician doesn't exercise any supervisory responsibilities.  However, the position may work in collaboration with team members from other departments to complete assigned tasks or projects, and the Parks Maintenance Technician may provide task direction to these other team members and/or seasonal employees.The following provides an overview of duties related to this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Perform maintenance and janitorial work at parks facilities: buildings, grounds, play equipment, athletic fields, etc.
  • Perform snow and ice control on sidewalks and streets manually and with power equipment.
  • Mow, aerate, fertilize, and spray turf.
  • Lead seasonal employees in the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the Village's parks and greenspace.
  • Perform basic maintenance of equipment including greasing, washing, fueling, and winterizing.
  • Perform the necessary maintenance for the proper upkeep of parklands such as mowing grass and planting, cutting, and trimming trees, shrubbery, and flowers.
  • During summer months assist with Splash Pad maintenance.
  • Operate snow removal, salting, and/or sanding equipment to remove snow from Village parking lot surfaces and bike trails.  The Public Works & Utilities Department may utilize this position to assist in snow removal operations on Village streets.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as end loaders, bulldozers, dump trucks, and backhoes in the construction and landscaping of park areas.
  • Inspects and repairs playground equipment, fencing, signs, and other park amenities.
  • Maintains athletic fields including ball diamonds, soccer and other fields and hard surface areas as assigned.
  • Performs a variety of general maintenance activities on park amenities including electrical, plumbing, irrigation, and carpentry.
  • Operates and maintains water and irrigation systems in parks.
  • Assist the Village Forester in planting, removal, and maintenance of all Village trees.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • A valid Wisconsin Driver’s License. 
  • Commercial Drivers license (CDL) must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • Must posses or obtain Certified Pool and Spa Operator Certification or equivalent within 9 months of hire.
  • WI DATCAP herbicide & pesticide applicator permit desired.
  • One to three years' experience in park or facility maintenance, construction work or within skilled trades is desired.
  • One to three years’ experience in basic plumbing and/or equipment operation is desired.
  • Employee must be able to sand, salt, plow, haul, and dispose of snow in appropriate manner from streets, public parking lots, Village-owned sidewalks, and walkways.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use computers, tablets, and other devices to perform job functions.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the public and contractors in the field.
  • Ability to safely operate various light and heavy machinery in the exercise of duties such as dump/plow trucks, skid steer, brush chipper, small hand tools, and others as required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to exert physical effort to complete the assigned task.  This may include, but is not limited to, some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, crawling, and lifting.  The employee may be required to carry, push, and/or pull objects and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.  

This position is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.  The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb, or balance.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

  • This position is exposed to the following conditions: dirt, dust, heat, cold, noise, fumes, odors, wetness / humidity, vibrations, sudden temperature changes, and darkness.  
  • This position occasionally encounters the following: electrical hazards, mechanical hazards, and heights above 10 ft.  
  • This position encounters the following: chemical hazards and moving vehicles traffic.  
  • The work is performed in a variety of settings including outdoors (extreme heat or cold), shop / warehouse, vehicle, streets, and indoor office setting.
  • Requires use of protective devices such as facemasks, hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, and gloves.
  • Emergency work, which includes snow removal, is sometimes required during nonstandard hours and may require overtime.
  • There is occasional interaction with the general public.

Hours of Work
Regularly scheduled hours are Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday. Additional hours may be required with little or no notice. Different shifts may also be required as well as call-out, on-call, and stand-by. Where applicable, overtime pay shall follow the policy of the Village of Cottage Grove.  In addition to these hours, this position will be required to participate in a rotating weekend schedule.  The weekend on-call schedule includes weekend and holiday hours on a rotating basis with other staff members.
