About this Role
NorthStar Energy Services is looking for a Cost Data Analyst to analyze commodity markets, material and supplier pricing, and internal cost data to support procurement, estimating, finance, and operations. This role will help identify cost exposure, improve forecasting and estimating assumptions, support strategic sourcing decisions, and protect project margins.
What You'll Do
- Monitor and analyze commodity markets and key cost drivers, including steel, copper, aluminum, fuel, electrical materials, equipment, freight, and other materials important to the organization.
- Develop and maintain commodity-cost models, forecasts, dashboards, and escalation assumptions to identify historical trends, current market conditions, and anticipated cost movements.
- Analyze supplier pricing and purchase history against commodity indices and market benchmarks to identify cost variances, trends, and sourcing opportunities.
- Partner with Procurement, Estimating, Finance, Project Controls, and Operations to assess the impact of commodity and material-price changes on project costs, bids, backlog, forecasts, and margins.
- Support strategic sourcing, supplier negotiations, budgeting, and long-term planning through market intelligence, price benchmarking, cost-driver analysis, and scenario modeling.
- Communicate significant market trends, cost changes, risks, opportunities, and recommended actions to business leaders through recurring reports and presentations.
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Supply Chain Management, Business Analytics, or a related field.
- 2–5 years of experience in financial analysis, procurement analytics, supply chain, commodity analysis, cost analysis, strategic sourcing, or a related analytical role.
- Strong analytical and financial modeling skills, with the ability to analyze large datasets, identify trends, and translate complex information into actionable business insights.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with Power BI, Tableau, or similar business intelligence and visualization tools is preferred.
- Working knowledge of commodity pricing, supplier cost structures, market indices, cost variance analysis, forecasting, and procurement principles.
- Experience with ERP, procurement, or financial systems, including the ability to extract, organize, and analyze purchasing and cost data.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across Procurement, Finance, Estimating, Operations, and Project Controls and present findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to travel up to 10% based on business needs.

- Experience in the energy, utility, infrastructure construction, industrial, manufacturing, or engineering sectors.
- Familiarity with commodities and materials used in energy infrastructure, including copper, aluminum, steel, fuel, and electrical components.
