Description

Global Packaging Systems (GPS) - A Division on PMD
Pay Range: $30.00–$46.00/hour
Employment Type: Full-Time | Non-Exempt

Global Packaging Systems (GPS) is looking for an experienced CNC Programmer / Set-Up professional to join our manufacturing team. This is a highly skilled, hands-on role responsible for programming, setting up, and proving out CNC milling operations to produce accurate, high-quality parts.

The CNC Programmer / Set-Up will use Mastercam CAM software, solid models, engineering drawings, and machining expertise to develop efficient machining processes from concept through production. This position also works closely with Engineering, Quality, Production, and the CNC Supervisor to solve machining challenges, develop manufacturing processes, and support the development of CNC team members.

The ideal candidate is a strong CNC programmer and machinist who enjoys solving problems, improving processes, and helping others develop their technical skills

What You'll Do

CNC Programming & Machining:

  • Review blueprints, solid models, sketches, specifications, manuals, and sample parts to determine machining processes and setup requirements.
  • Develop and generate CNC programs using Mastercam CAM software and solid models.
  • Determine the most effective tooling, tool holders, fixtures, and work-holding methods for each job.
  • Develop programs for machining parts and fixtures.
  • Set up tooling, fixtures, vises, clamps, and work-holding devices in CNC mills.
  • Establish tool lengths, work coordinates, and fixture offsets.
  • Prove out programs and produce first-piece and prototype parts.
  • Run and edit CNC programs and make necessary machine-control adjustments.
  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, fixture, and programming issues.

Process Development & Quality:

  • Develop detailed setup sheets containing tooling, fixture, work-piece, raw material, and other information needed for repeat production.
  • Inspect first parts to verify that the machining process meets required specifications.
  • Partner with the Quality Department during first-article inspections and other quality activities.
  • Collaborate with Engineers, Production personnel, and other programmers to resolve machining and fixture challenges.
  • Help develop manufacturing process plans, including personnel, materials, subcontracting, facility, tooling, and equipment requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve machining efficiency, quality, and repeatability.

Quoting & Production Support:

  • Determine material and tooling requirements for quoting and manufacturing.
  • Develop program, setup, and cycle-time estimates to support quoting and production planning.
  • Provide technical input regarding machining methods, tooling, fixtures, and production requirements.
  • Train and support CNC Operators following initial job setup.
  • Work with the CNC Supervisor to coach, mentor, and cross-train CNC Set-Up/Operators.
  • Help develop the technical capabilities and versatility of the CNC team.

General Responsibilities:

  • Perform assigned preventive maintenance activities.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Follow all company safety procedures and properly use required PPE.
  • Perform other duties within the scope of the position as assigned by management.

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of CNC machining experience, including significant experience programming and setting up CNC mills.
  • Strong experience programming CNC mills using Mastercam CAM software.
  • Strong knowledge of cutting tools, tool holders, vises, clamps, and other work-holding methods.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints and 3D solid models.
  • Ability to develop, run, and edit CNC programs.
  • Experience establishing tool lengths, work coordinates, and fixture offsets.
  • Ability to develop or modify work-holding devices and fixtures.
  • Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, feeds, speeds, and setup requirements.
  • Ability to calculate machining requirements and apply basic algebra and mathematical concepts.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with Engineering, Quality, Production, and other team members.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Related vocational, technical, or associate degree in CNC machining, manufacturing technology, or a related field.
  • Experience developing manufacturing process plans.
  • Experience with CNC machining for prototype, low-volume, or complex parts.
  • Experience with first-article inspection processes.
  • Experience providing technical direction, training, or mentoring to CNC Operators and Set-Up personnel.

We're looking for someone who:

  • Takes ownership of the machining process from programming through production.
  • Has strong attention to detail and takes pride in producing high-quality parts.
  • Enjoys solving complex machining and manufacturing problems.
  • Can translate a drawing or 3D model into an efficient machining process.
  • Thinks proactively about tooling, fixtures, cycle time, and manufacturability.
  • Is comfortable troubleshooting at the machine.
  • Looks for opportunities to improve processes and increase efficiency.
  • Communicates well with Engineers, Quality, Production, and fellow machinists.
  • Enjoys sharing knowledge and helping less-experienced team members grow.
  • Can balance independent work with being a strong team contributor.

If you're an experienced CNC programmer and machinist who enjoys turning complex designs into precision-machined parts—and helping improve the people and processes around you—we'd like to hear from you.
