SUMMARY

This position is responsible for assisting with the general maintenance, special projects of golf course; condition and care of equipment; application of fertilizer, fungicide, insecticide required to operate a 36-hole golf course; assist with supervision and training of up to 20 employees during peak summer months; make recommendations on how to improve conditions of golf course and more economically operate the golf course to the Golf Course Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• At the direction of the Golf Course Superintendent and Golf Professional/General Manager, plans, schedules, assigns, and supervises work in a variety of golf course maintenance operations including daily maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, irrigation, routine maintenance, and facility and grounds inspections.
• Assists in the direction of crews in a variety of golf course maintenance operations consisting of, but not limited to, trash and debris clean up, restroom sanitation, mowing and specialized detailed turf care, dirt work, pesticide, fungicide, and fertilizer applications, seeding, irrigation, turf renovation, and the maintenance of all supporting equipment.
• Assists Golf Course Superintendent and Golf Professional/General Manager in preparing annual budget by submitting recommendations, cost evaluations, and justifications for consideration and approval.
• Assists with evaluation, training, and interviews of new employees. 
• Assists with the general efficiency and productivity of all golf course personnel by directing through subordinate supervisory personnel, and helping to establish and enforce performance standards, procedures, and policies as directed by the Golf Course Superintendent and Golf Professional/General Manager.
• Inspects and supervises contract work and make recommendation for approval or disapproval at completion of project.
• Participates in daily meetings with Golf Professional/General Manager to keep informed of all activities to have golf course prepared and presentable for each daily use.
• Inspects facilities and grounds to determine maintenance or repairs needed.
• Oversees Kronos Time Keeping.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent with some college level coursework and a minimum of five years of experience in golf course maintenance dealing directly with irrigation repair and scheduling, fertilizing, spraying chemicals, seeding, and working knowledge of golf course and golf course maintenance activities.  Education in the field of turf grass maintenance may be substituted for experience.  TDA Pesticide License, Texas Irrigation Tech License required or ability to obtain within the first year of date of hire. Valid Texas Driver’s License required.

KNOWLEDGE:

• Assists in scheduling and presenting training sessions for improving skills, performance, safety and MSDS safety training.
• Assists Golf Course Superintendent in preparation and submits written daily work sheets, special project reports, vandalism reports, accident reports, etc. to Golf Professional/General Manager.
• Coordinates maintenance activities around an aggressive tournament, corporate outing, and league play schedule. 
• Assists with the security of equipment, buildings, and grounds.
• Keeps up to date on City policy and relays those to staff.
• Assists Golf Course Superintendent daily with operation of course and tournament set ups.
• Maintains the supply and equipment inventories, prepares and processes purchase orders, gathers information, and writes bid specification, obtains proposals according to competitive procurement guidelines, manages credit cards and makes purchases of up to $1,000 without supervisory approval.
• Oversees inventory and property management.

SKILLS:

• Calculates all needed material for the completion of assigned duties.
• Coordinates with other departments and agencies in scheduling assistance type related work and securing equipment.
• Programs and implements irrigation schedules based on weather programs and parameters using the irrigation computer system
• Applies pesticides following all safety standards and supervises pesticide application and irrigation repairs.
• Ability to handle pressure from complaints, and recommendations by public; requests by supervisor to complete tasks and pressure of condition of golf course as greens are highly susceptible to disease-insects and fungus.
• Knowledge of proper use of sodcutter, plugger, and other hand tools used on golf course.
• Assists Golf Course Superintendent with watering systems performance seven days a week to make sure operating properly and timers are set for proper precipitation rate.

ABILITIES:

• Ability to use small office equipment, including copy machines, scanners, printers and/or multi-line telephone systems.
• Ability and knowledge to operate loaders, greens mowers, out-front rotary mower, spray rig, pickup, tractor, front-end utility cart with aerifier and top dresser, fairway mower units, fringe and tee mowers, welder, and chain saw.
• Ability to use computers for data entry and word processing.
• Ability to use or repair small/light equipment, such as power tools.
• Ability to use or repair medium equipment and machinery, such as vehicles or commercial mowers.
• Ability to supervise employees using or repairing heavy or complex equipment.
• Ability to establish policies for using, acquiring, and/or maintaining heavy or complex machinery.
