Detailing Manager - Architectural Metals

Statement of the Job

Manage the detailing of Division 05 miscellaneous and architectural metals packages for architectural projects — stairs, railings, handrails, ladders, embeds, lintels, guards, canopies and miscellaneous supports. Review, delegate and coordinate all project models and shop drawings produced in Tekla Structures, provide design and fabrication guidance to the detailing staff, and detail projects personally as time permits.

Basic Functions

Design & Fabrication Knowledge

• Interpret architectural finish and aesthetic requirements — exposed welds, sightlines, reveals, gauge and material selection — for architecturally exposed metals.
• Apply working knowledge of connection design and strength of materials, and applicable AISC, AWS and NAAMM standards for architectural metals.
• Apply shop fabrication and welding knowledge — material availability, cutting, forming, welding, galvanizing and finish requirements — to every detailing decision.
• Coordinate with outside Engineering to develop connections and details that are economical to fabricate, ship and install.
• Review architectural drawings and specifications to confirm the Division 05 scope of work, identify conflicts and support the RFI process.
• Evaluate design alternatives for stairs, railings and guards against IBC and OSHA loading, and other applicable code requirements, before detailing begins.

Production Detailing

• Detail Division 05 miscellaneous and architectural metals scope in Tekla Structures as time permits and schedule dictates.
• Produce complete submittal packages — erection plans, shop drawings, material lists and NC data — on the schedule committed to Project Management.
• Maintain model integrity in Tekla Structures so material lists, CNC/DSTV fabrication data and drawing output are accurate.
• Incorporate field-verified dimensions and coordinate interfaces with adjacent trades and the structural steel package.
• Communicate with customers, architects and general contractors to coordinate details and resolve problems.
• Meet with architects, contractors and steel erectors as required to represent the company.

Systems Administration

• Provide production support for Tekla Structures and related BIM software.
• Develop, implement and enforce Tekla Structures modeling, numbering and drawing standards.
• Customize Tekla Structures — custom components, templates, reports and NC/DSTV output.
• Supply technical support for all detailing software (Tekla Structures, AutoCAD, Trimble Connect).
• Provide support for plotting and electronic file submission.
• Interact on project standards coordination with clients.
• Provide leadership and vision in BIM and model-based fabrication.
• Train in-house staff on Tekla Structures workflows, templates and custom components.
• Maintain Tekla Structures licenses and software inventory.
• Prepare written technology evaluations for future software adoption.
• Conduct project related model reviews and constructability checks.
• Work with IT on all software updates related to detailing.

Supervision

• Review projects and make recommendations on cost savings methods, material substitutions, connection simplification and design changes.
• Communicate with Project Managers and instruct detailers as to project requirements.
• Communicate with detailers on detail changes for labor and material savings.
• Delegate work as required by workload and sublet work or work additional hours if required.
• Select, qualify and manage outsourced detailing firms — scope the work, negotiate rates and schedule, and issue clear detailing packages and standards at kickoff.
• Monitor outsourced detailer progress, quality and hours against budget, and hold subcontracted work to the same modeling, checking and drawing standards as in-house work.
• Communicate management’s goals and procedures to the Detailing Department.
• Train detailers as required by their experience level.
• Participate in all Project Turnover Meetings.
• Assign or personally participate in field measuring when needed.
• Facilitate the weekly Detailing L10.
• Coordinate with fabrication and Project Management on shop feedback, drawing release and project sequencing.

Estimating & Budget Support

• Support Estimating with take-offs, preliminary material lists and detailing budgets for Division 05 bid packages.
• Review bid documents for scope gaps, alternates, allowances and unusual conditions that affect cost.
• Establish detailing budgets by project, monitor hours against budget and report variances to the General Manager.
• Advise on connection and detail alternatives that reduce shop labor, material and finishing cost.
• Evaluate the detailing and fabrication impact of change orders and provide backup documentation for pricing.
• Feed actual model quantities and detailing hours from completed projects back into future estimates.

Quality Control & Drawing Checking

• Check detailers’ models and shop drawings for dimensional accuracy, connection adequacy, weld and finish callouts, and conformance to plans and specifications.
• Maintain a documented checking process and checklists that every package clears before release.
• Verify that approval drawing comments, RFI responses and bulletin revisions are incorporated before release to fabrication.
• Confirm field measurements and as-built conditions are reflected in the model before releasing critical items.
• Control drawing revisions and transmittals so the shop and field are building to the current issue.
• Track and trend detailing errors and rework. Use the findings to coach staff and update standards.

Personnel

• Interview prospective candidates for drafting related positions.
• Monitor vacations, sick days and similar for employees in the Detailing Department.
• Set expectations, conduct reviews and develop staff skills in design, fabrication knowledge and Tekla Structures.

General

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience Required

Trade school, technical degree or equivalent experience in structural or miscellaneous metals detailing; five or more years detailing Division 05 architectural metals packages, with demonstrated Tekla Structures proficiency and supervisory experience.

Knowledge of Equipment and/or Software Required

Advanced proficiency in Tekla Structures, including custom components, templates and report/NC output; working knowledge of AutoCAD, Trimble Connect and PDF markup tools. Knowledge of detailing procedures, tools, calculators and computer equipment used by Architectural Metals. Knowledge of Standard Iron equipment, fabrication processes and facilities and their capabilities.
