Director, Facilities and Plant Operations

The Director of Facilities & Plant Operations provides strategic leadership and oversight for all facilities, engineering, maintenance, utilities, and plant operations functions across the hospital. This role is responsible for ensuring a safe, reliable, efficient, and regulatory-compliant environment that supports patient care, operational excellence, and organizational goals. The Director leads departmental operations, capital planning, budget management, regulatory readiness, infrastructure improvement initiatives, and construction projects while partnering closely with clinical, operational, and administrative leaders.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):

• Provide strategic and operational leadership for facilities, engineering, maintenance, and plant operations services.
• Oversee the management and performance of facilities staff, supervisors, contractors, and vendors.
• Develop and administer departmental operating and capital budgets; monitor assigned cost centers and financial performance.
• Direct preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs to ensure reliability of building systems and infrastructure.
• Lead capital planning, infrastructure renewal, renovation, and construction projects from planning through completion.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, and accreditation requirements, including The Joint Commission, CMS, NFPA, OSHA, and EPA standards.
• Oversee Environment of Care (EOC), Life Safety, utility management, and emergency preparedness programs.
• Provide leadership for critical utility systems, including HVAC, electrical distribution, emergency power, medical gas, plumbing, water management, and building automation systems.
• Drive energy management, sustainability, and operational efficiency initiatives.
• Establish departmental goals, performance metrics, policies, and continuous improvement programs.
• Collaborate with organizational leadership to support strategic growth, facility master planning, and operational priorities.
• Serve as the hospital's subject matter expert on facilities infrastructure, regulatory readiness, and physical environment standards.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Extensive knowledge of healthcare facilities operations, engineering systems, utility management, regulatory compliance, and construction practices.
• Demonstrated leadership experience in a complex healthcare, hospital, or facilities environment.
• Strong financial acumen with experience developing and managing operating and capital budgets.
• Proven project management skills with experience leading large-scale capital, renovation, or infrastructure projects.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
• Knowledge of applicable healthcare codes, standards, and regulations.
• Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), building automation systems (BAS), energy management systems (EMS), and Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to lead teams, manage competing priorities, and drive organizational change and continuous improvement.

EDUCATION:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Facilities Management, Construction Management, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
• Master’s degree in healthcare administration, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
• Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) preferred.
• Additional professional certifications (e.g., PE, CPE, FASHE) preferred.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:

• 7-10 years of progressive facilities, engineering, or plant operations experience in a healthcare or similarly complex environment.
• Minimum 5 years of leadership experience overseeing facilities, engineering, maintenance, or plant operations teams.
• Experience managing regulatory compliance programs, operating and capital budgets, and major construction or infrastructure projects.

Pay Range:

$150,000.00 USD - $175,000.00 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
