The Village of Mundelein is seeking a qualified individual for a full-time, entry-level Public Works Maintenance Technician II position in the Streets Division. 


Under supervision of the Streets Supervisor, Streets Crew Leaders, or other departmental authority, the qualified applicant will be responsible for operating a variety of equipment and trucks utilized in construction, maintenance, and repair activities. The Streets Maintenance Technician II will perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of streets, storm drainage systems, pavement and sidewalk repair, landscape restoration, street sign installation, snow and ice control operations, and other divisional functions.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Operate trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Operate trucks and construction or power equipment, such as back-hoe, asphalt roller mowers, tractors, dump truck, snowplow, and other kinds of large equipment.
  • Operate jackhammers, mowers, and other small equipment and tools to maintain streets, storm drainage systems, buildings, and grounds.
  • Perform street maintenance duties such as paving, patching, removal, and curb repairs.
  • Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; takes appropriate actions if necessary and cleans equipment.
  • Control traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required or assigned.
  • Perform snow and ice control measures including salting, plowing, and removal.
  • Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate federal, state, and Village safety and security standards including trenching/excavation and confined space entry.
  • Perform all duties as assigned.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance. 

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid Illinois Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements or have the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire. 
  • Work experience or training in a job-related field is preferred.


NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to use general and specialized tools and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Physical ability to perform the foregoing duties in a satisfactory manner.
  • Ability to work independently in a variety of environmental situations, including indoors, outdoors, and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work for extended hours in all weather conditions and perform physical exertion as necessary in assisting with or completing department activities.
  • Ability to drive and to operate department equipment.
  • Ability to work overtime as directed or needed. 
  • Ability to comply with all safety procedures and policies of the Village. 


WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm. 
  • Off-hour, weekend, and/or holiday shifts may be assigned by supervisor. 
  • The work environment typifies a field work environment where on-site visits of buildings, facilities, and construction-in-progress are a regular part of daily tasks. Duties are primarily performed in an outdoor environment and require driving.
  • May require continuation of work tasks for up to 16 hours with limited breaks in events such as snow and ice control, water main breaks, and natural disaster response.

  • The employee is regularly required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and or talk and hear. This position requires physically demanding work for sustained periods of time.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and use their hands to handle, or reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move more than 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office and moderate in the field.
  • There is exposure to hazards associated with on-site visits such as uneven terrain, construction hazards, noise, odors and fumes, hazardous materials and chemicals, inclement weather conditions, and confined spaces or other undesirable conditions.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The starting hourly wage for this position is $30.32.


The full wage range for this role is $30.32 to $41.50 per hour. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to advance a step within the wage range annually on their hire date anniversary, in accordance with the IUOE Local 150 collective bargaining agreement. Cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs), if approved under the collective bargaining agreement, may also be provided at the start of the fiscal year. 


This position is covered under the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 150. The Local 150 collective bargaining agreement is found on the Village of Mundelein website: IUOE Local 150 Collective Bargaining Agreement .


The Village of Mundelein offers a comprehensive benefits package including participation in the IMRF pension program; medical, dental, vision, and group term life and AD&D insurance; and paid sick time, vacation, and holiday pay. The Village contributes at least 85% of the monthly medical insurance premium and 100% of the monthly premiums for dental, vision, and group term life and AD&D insurance. The Village also offers additional benefits, including but not limited to, medical and dependent care flexible spending accounts (FSAs), a 457(b) deferred compensation plan, and tuition reimbursement.
