Veterinary Medical Director – Mercer Island, WA

 

A veterinary practice is seeking an experienced veterinarian to serve as a Medical Director and provide both clinical leadership and day-to-day guidance for the medical team. This role combines hands-on patient care with responsibility for maintaining high standards of medicine, developing veterinarians, supporting team performance, and improving the overall client and patient experience.

 

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and mentor the veterinary team while promoting professional development.
• Establish and maintain high standards for patient care, medical decision-making, anesthesia, pain management, and wellness services.
• Provide guidance and feedback to veterinarians regarding case management and clinical decisions.
• Review medical records to promote accurate documentation and consistent quality of care.
• Develop and maintain appropriate medical protocols, procedures, and safety standards.
• Support decisions involving medical equipment, medications, products, and related hospital resources.
• Monitor medication and controlled-substance documentation and compliance.
• Organize and lead regular veterinary team meetings.
• Help coordinate veterinary schedules, coverage, time off, and continuing education.
• Identify workflow challenges and implement improvements that support efficiency and productivity.
• Address team concerns and assist with conflict resolution.
• Promote collaboration among veterinarians, technicians, support staff, and practice leadership.
• Ensure consistent, compassionate, and timely communication with clients.
• Support a client-centered approach throughout the patient care process.
• Encourage continuing education and knowledge sharing among veterinary professionals.
• Partner with practice leadership on quality improvement initiatives and annual operational planning.
• Review financial and compliance reports and support appropriate practice goals.
• Promote accurate charge capture and sound medical and operational practices.
• Participate in hands-on patient care and other clinical duties as needed.

 

Qualifications

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
• Current veterinary license in good standing, or eligibility to obtain the required license.
• Significant veterinary clinical experience with demonstrated leadership capabilities.
• Experience overseeing or mentoring veterinary professionals is preferred.
• Experience with practice operations, financial performance, and team management is preferred.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• Ability to make sound clinical decisions while supporting the development of other veterinarians.
• Commitment to compassionate patient care, client service, teamwork, and continuous learning.
• Comfortable working in a hands-on clinical environment and handling animals safely.
• Ability to meet the physical demands of veterinary practice, including standing for extended periods and assisting with patient handling and lifting.
