Background and Context

Hull York Medical School (HYMS) is the joint medical school of the Universities of Hull and York. HYMS has been successful in training doctors who remain in the Yorkshire and Humberside area and enter specialties such as Primary Care and Psychiatry. Due to this success HYMS was awarded a 70% increase in medical student numbers in 2017, with the expanded cohort of 234 students graduating in 2024. In addition to the 5-year MB BS programme, HYMS also delivers a 6-year Medicine with Gateway Year programme, to support its widening participation strategy and a longitudinal integrated clerkship in year 4.

Supported by a team of Associate Directors of Primary Care Education whose focus is on recruitment and engagement of practices and quality of teaching.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the post

 

• Will be responsible for identifying, recruitment and onboarding of new GP practices to provide clinical placements for MB BS students (and where necessary Physician Associate students) in Scarborough and surround. 

 

• Oversee delivery of HYMS’ clinical programmes and development of new placements at practices in their area (currently the MB BS programme). They will work closely with the Director of Primary Care Education, Phase leads and the Professional Support teams across the School and their local NHS Acute Trust to ensure the quality assurance of primary care clinical teaching. They will promote excellent communications between the School, Student Liaison Team (local acute trust) and the teaching placements. 

 

• Will provide leadership to ensure the School can provide an education-centred approach to clinical placements, working in partnership with the Director of Primary Care Education, the MB BS Programme Director and programme delivery team and community colleagues. 

 

• Will contribute to developing and maintaining a strategic overview of placements across York, Scarborough and South Tees to inform future development of HYMS’ offer and manage mismatches of provision and requirements across this area. 

 

• Will be required to participate in a range of central HYMS activities like interviews, clinical examinations and communication workshops.
  

As this role is for a fixed term, personal development for the post holders will be a priority and appropriate support will be provided to address developmental needs.

This is a 0.2 FTE position for initially a period of 2 years with the option to renew thereafter. The post holder must have their own clinical portfolio work.
