Description
The Deputy Director of Law helps shape legal strategy, guide major policy initiatives, and supports the delivery of municipal services. The Deputy Directoris appointed by the Mayor and works directly with the Director of Law to oversee legal operations, manage attorneys and staff, coordinate significant litigation, supervise outside counsel, and provide practical legal advice on matters ranging from economic development and labor relations to infrastructure projects, utilities matters, local income tax, housing, public safety, procurement, and governance.
- Executive leadership and management of the Department of Law
- Strategic legal counsel to the Mayor, Director of Law, Cabinet, Council, and other senior leadership
- Oversight of major litigation, claims, and risk management matters
- Labor and employment law, collective bargaining, and personnel matters
- Economic development projects, development agreements, and public-private partnerships
- Active engagement and participation with Akron City Council, including regular weekly attendance at City Council meetings
- Drafting and negotiation of legislation, contracts, and intergovernmental agreements
- Supervision, mentoring, and professional development of attorneys and staff
- Acts on behalf of the Director of Law when required and as needed
- Performs related work as required
Preferred: Fifteen (15) or more years of legal practice and a demonstrated capacity to lead, mentor, and manage attorneys while advancing organizational goals. Residency within the corporate limits of the City of Akron within six (6) months of appointment.
Thorough working knowledge of Ohio and municipal law. Knowledge of the City of Akron, or other Ohio municipalities. Knowledge and skill in contract negotiation, regulatory compliance, risk assessment, strategic problem solving, and legislative implementation. Must possess technological proficiency, exceptional judgment, strong communication skills, political awareness, emotional intelligence, and a demonstrated ability to manage complex matters involving multiple stakeholders. Ability to perform at a high level in extreme circumstances and under stress. Ability to move projects from concept to implementation. Ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal advice. Ability to supervise attorneys, manage litigation, advise public officials, and handle complex governmental matters. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
