BASIC FUNCTION:

Omya is seeking a Health & Safety Specialist to support and promote a safe and healthy work environment at our Superior, Arizona operation. This role is responsible for accident prevention, workplace safety compliance, employee training, incident investigations, and continuous improvement of health and safety performance. The Health & Safety Specialist partners with employees, supervisors, and management to ensure compliance with OSHA, MSHA, company standards, and applicable regulatory requirements while fostering a strong safety-first culture across the site.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Workplace Safety & Compliance

• Conduct routine workplace inspections, audits, and field observations to identify hazards, unsafe conditions, and at-risk behaviors.
• Promote compliance with OSHA, MSHA, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
• Monitor safety performance and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
• Support site safety programs, policies, procedures, and initiatives.
• Maintain safety records, reports, and compliance documentation.
  

Hazard Identification & Risk Management

• Participate in hazard assessments, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and risk evaluations.
• Assist departments in identifying and mitigating workplace risks.
• Track and follow up on corrective actions to ensure timely closure.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on risk reduction and injury prevention.
  

Safety Training & Employee Engagement

• Conduct safety orientations for new employees, contractors, and visitors.
• Deliver training on safe work practices, PPE requirements, and regulatory compliance.
• Promote employee engagement and participation in safety programs.
• Serve as a resource for supervisors and employees on safety-related matters.
  

Incident Investigation & Reporting

• Investigate workplace incidents, injuries, near misses, and property damage events.
• Conduct root cause analyses and develop corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
• Prepare thorough investigation reports and ensure appropriate documentation is maintained.
• Monitor trends and recommend improvements based on incident data.
  

Emergency Preparedness & Response

• Support the development and maintenance of emergency response plans and procedures.
• Assist with emergency drills and preparedness activities.
• Ensure emergency equipment and resources are inspected and maintained.
• Participate in emergency response activities as required.
  

Regulatory & Audit Support

• Support internal inspections, audits, and compliance assessments.
• Assist during OSHA, MSHA, and other regulatory inspections.
• Maintain audit-ready documentation and records.
• Support implementation of corrective actions resulting from audits and inspections.
  

Continuous Improvement

• Monitor safety metrics and performance indicators.
• Support site objectives related to safety performance and regulatory compliance.
• Recommend and implement improvements to strengthen Omya's safety culture.
• Participate in cross-functional projects that improve operational safety and efficiency.
  

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

• Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Technology, Engineering, Mining, or a related technical field preferred.
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  

Experience

• Minimum 2 years of experience in a health and safety role.
• Experience in industrial manufacturing, mining, aggregates, construction, or a heavy industrial environment preferred.
• Mining industry experience is strongly preferred.
• Experience conducting inspections, investigations, safety training, and compliance activities preferred.
  

Skills & Knowledge

• Knowledge of OSHA and MSHA regulations and compliance requirements.
• Understanding of hazard identification, risk assessment, and incident investigation processes.
• Experience with root cause analysis and corrective action programs.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to influence and coach employees at all levels of the organization.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and safety reporting systems.
