Description


Our Mechanic will provide skilled maintenance and repair services for Public Works vehicles and equipment, including gasoline, diesel, and electrical systems, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the municipal fleet. This position supports essential city services by diagnosing mechanical issues, completing timely and accurate repairs, and maintaining equipment readiness to minimize downtime and ensure uninterrupted delivery of public services.

In accordance with union staffing provisions, internal candidates will receive priority consideration through Friday, August 7, 2026.

Salary:
Salary Range: $35.46 - $44.09 [Steps 1-12]
Anticipated Starting Salary: $35.46 - $36.89 [Steps 1-3]

Schedule:
Standard forty (40) hour work week. Subject to emergency call-outs.


The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation.   • Perform all tasks, functions and duties normally assigned within the vehicle/equipment maintenance divisions, including but not limited to:
    • Inspect status of all city vehicles and equipment, diagnose mechanical problems, accurately calibrates, adjusts and makes repairs as needed.
    • Report vehicle and equipment status and condition to Lead Mechanic as needed or requested.
    • Maintain accurate and complete records on all vehicles and equipment, both manually and by computer keyboard in a timely manner.
    • Weld, fabricate and assemble parts and accessories for vehicles and equipment.
    • Read and correctly interpret shop manuals and vehicle manuals.
    • Perform general cleanup activities.
  • Use diagnostic computers, hand tools, meters, keyboards and electrical/mechanical equipment and manipulate machinery.
  • Assist with inventory control, including ordering and purchasing parts for the maintenance of all equipment/vehicles and to guarantee the necessary supplies and equipment to carry out the efficient maintenance of all equipment/vehicles.
  • Adhere to and implement all safety rules, regulations and practices including wearing appropriate safety equipment as necessary to protect the employees, the operation and the public.
  • Keep abreast of new procedures, practices and methods for servicing light and heavy equipment.
  • Respond to emergency call-out situations within 30 minutes.
  • Establish and maintain an excellent customer service environment for employee relations as well as outside agencies, vendors and customers.
  • Perform manual labor and other duties as apparent or assigned.

  • Demonstrates knowledge, skill and ability to diagnose electrical and mechanical issues and make necessary repairs.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of methods, materials, equipment and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to accurately perform manual and computer entry record keeping.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of occupational hazard and safety precautions and shows initiative in recommending methods to improve safety, efficiency and quality on the job.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude and maintains effective and professional working relationships with all department personnel and the public.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work both independently and as a team player.
  • Demonstrates effective leadership by prioritizing and organizing workload, consistently meeting critical deadlines, maintaining reliable routine operations, and making sound decisions under pressure.
  • Effectively communicates, complies with applicable laws, policies, and regulations, and follows oral and written instructions.


Minimum Requirements (all):
  • High school diploma or equivalent and a degree or certification in Vehicular Mechanics from an accredited institution.
  • Three years as an Automotive Service Technician or related experience.
  • Possess and bring tools and toolbox necessary to properly repair and maintain vehicles, light duty trucks and equipment. 
  • Possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class B Driver’s License, or ability to obtain within six (6) months, and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Provide personal transportation in a manner that allows emergency response to White Bear Lake Public Works garage within thirty (30) minutes.

Skills and Experience That Set You Up for Success (Not required but helpful!):
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician
  • Experience working on diesel trucks and heavy vehicles/equipment
  • Tanker Endorsement on Class B Driver’s License
  • Truck Inspection Certificate and/or DOT Inspector
  • Hydraulic repair diagnostics and hose repair experience
  • Continuing Education units to stay up-to-date with current and evolving technology

Equivalency:
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.
Physical
This position requires regular physical activity including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and the use of hands and arms for extended periods while performing mechanical repairs and operating tools. The employee must be able to lift and/or move materials and equipment, generally up to 100 pounds, and occasionally more with assistance or appropriate mechanical devices.

The position requires sufficient visual and auditory ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical issues, read technical documents and schematics, and communicate effectively with staff, contractors, and the public.

Cognitive
Cognitive demands include the ability to prioritize work, manage multiple assignments, troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems, and make independent decisions under time constraints or stressful conditions.

Environmental
The work environment may include exposure to noise, grease, fumes, chemicals, moving mechanical parts, and varying indoor and outdoor weather conditions. Work may also involve confined spaces and proximity to heavy equipment. 
Safety awareness, adaptability, and professionalism are essential to ensure inspections are conducted efficiently and accurately under all environmental conditions.
 
Frequent interaction with City staff, contractors, and the public is required. The Mechanic must communicate clearly, professionally, and courteously when discussing work status, providing technical information, and addressing service or compliance issues. This position requires sound judgment, the ability to remain composed in challenging situations, and consistent representation of the City in a respectful and professional manner.
