Position Summary
The Fleet Maintenance Mechanic is primarily responsible for the preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of the Gardens' fleet vehicles, tractors, forklifts, farm-specific equipment, and related heavy and light equipment. This is a hands-on mechanical role; general facilities and grounds support duties are secondary and performed as assigned to support the broader Facilities and Grounds team.

General Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on fleet vehicles, compact tractors, forklifts, farm-specific equipment, skid steers, utility vehicles (Gators, gas and electric), golf carts, trailers, and other heavy equipment.
- Diagnoses and repairs engines (gas and diesel), hydraulic systems, batteries and charging systems, brakes, steering, suspension, and tires.
- Establishes and follows preventative maintenance schedules; maintains accurate service, repair, and inspection records for all fleet and equipment.
- Operates and maintains small engines and hand tools, gas-driven fastening tools, hand drills, woodworking machinery (band saw, mortise, drill press, power saw, joiner, shaper), snow blowers, and lawn mowers used in support of fleet and equipment upkeep.
- Safely and proficiently operates the equipment being serviced, including fleet vehicles, tractors, forklifts, skid steers, golf carts, and utility vehicles, to test and verify repairs.
- Estimates parts and materials needed for repairs and orders replacement components as needed.
- Participates in snow removal operations, including operation of snow removal equipment and fleet vehicles.
- Maintains current working knowledge of fleet maintenance practices, mechanical troubleshooting techniques, and relevant safety regulations.
- Performs routine building maintenance, including replacing light bulbs and ballasts, and repairing or replacing flooring, plumbing fixtures, roofing, windows, doors, walls, and ceiling tiles.
- Performs painting and drywall patching and repair, interior and exterior.
- Repairs and maintains building components such as walls, doors, windows, counters, cabinets, furniture, and other fixtures.
- Moves and transports furniture and equipment; assists with grounds keeping and the setup and teardown of equipment for special events.
- Inspects facilities and equipment to identify installation, maintenance, and repair needs, and interprets sketches, building plans, specifications, and oral or written instructions as needed for assigned tasks.
- Maintains a positive and professional working relationship with managers, co-workers, members, visitors, and others.
- Maintains stability under pressure and adapts plans as needed throughout the day.
- Works a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as necessary.
- Works safely at all times and follows all applicable safety regulations and precautions.
- Regular attendance at the worksite may be required. As with all positions at Denver Botanic Gardens, the incumbent must be in good performance standing to be eligible for remote work. Remote work is at the discretion of management at all times.

Position Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of fleet maintenance principles, preventative maintenance programs, and mechanical troubleshooting for light-duty vehicles, heavy equipment, tractors, forklifts, farm equipment, utility vehicles (Gators), golf carts, and trailers.
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems, diesel and gasoline engines, electrical systems, batteries, charging systems, and general mechanical repair techniques.
- Ability to safely operate, inspect, and perform routine maintenance on heavy equipment, tractors, forklifts, utility vehicles, golf carts, and fleet vehicles while maintaining accurate maintenance records.
- Skills in the use of tools and equipment related to building maintenance.
- Knowledge of proper safety requirements related to fleet and building maintenance practices.
- Ability to interpret building plans and specifications.
- Must have proven excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills in dealing with the public.
- Ability to maintain stability under pressure and able to deal well with stressful situations.
- Ability to be flexible and willing to modify plans, when necessary, throughout the day.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Suite products, specifically Word, Excel and Outlook and Teams.
- Ability to work overtime as necessary.
- Must be a positive representative of the Gardens both internally and externally at all times.
- Must work with respect and cooperation at all times with fellow employees and the public.
- Must be committed to working safely at all times.
Experience/Education:
- High school diploma / GED and/or combination of education and equivalent experience is required.
- Minimum of 2 years of Experience performing preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs on fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, tractors, forklifts, farm equipment, utility vehicles (Gators), golf carts (gas and electric), skid steers, or similar equipment is required.
- General maintenance or facilities repair experience, or operation of light motor-driven equipment, is a plus.
- ASE certification, small engine certification, or equivalent mechanical training is desirable but not required.
