Summary of Job Duties:

The Department of Mathematical Sciences in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for one tenure-track Assistant Professor line in the mathematical sciences to start in August 2027. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to conduct high-impact research in computational and applied mathematics or a closely related field. Additionally, we seek candidates who have an enthusiasm for teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and for supervising graduate and undergraduate research.

An exceptional candidate may be considered for appointment to the Lawrence Jesser Toll, Jr. Endowed Chair in Mathematical Sciences, which is designed to support the academic and professional development of the holder and assist in building a nationally competitive mathematical sciences program.

This is an in- person position. Most university classes are offered face-to-face, and extensive in- person engagement in such activities as office hours, student advising, and departmental, college, and university committee meetings is essential to advancing student success and departmental effectiveness. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

About the Department:
The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers degrees with focuses on applied math, pure math and statistics. Courses prepare students for careers in secondary education, actuarial science and industry and graduate school. Students will receive a broad, interdisciplinary education, highlighting the utility and value of mathematics in many careers and disciplines. Learn more at math.uark.edu.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the date of initial appointment

  • An active research agenda in mathematics, computational mathematics, applied mathematics, or a closely related field

  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence in mathematics at the graduate and undergraduate levels

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated research potential in computational and applied mathematics that complements, expands, and has potential for collaboration with the expertise of existing faculty in computational mathematics

  • Strong record of successful publication and potential for external funding

  • Experience in interdisciplinary research

  • Experience mentoring students in independent research


Additional Information:

This position is a Designated Research Position and is regulated by the Arkansas Research Education Protection Act of 2025.  Prior to issuance of an offer of employment, the University is required to request and obtain additional information about an applicant’s background and, if required, conduct an additional review of that background information.
