Summary of Job Duties:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Arkansas invites applications for outstanding candidates to fill a 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position with an anticipated start date of August 2027.

The Department seeks candidates with a strong background in advanced manufacturing whose research complements existing strengths and has the potential to support large-scale collaborative funding. Areas of interest include additive and hybrid manufacturing of metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, and multi-material or functional structures. Additional interests include intelligent and autonomous manufacturing, distributed, cooperative, and robot-assisted fabrication, in-situ sensing and process control, computational design, digital twins, artificial intelligence (AI), and scalable manufacturing system integration. Relevant application areas include energy (e.g., batteries and nuclear energy), aerospace, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, and industrial manufacturing. The successful candidate will be expected to teach core mechanical engineering courses in support of our undergraduate and graduate programs and contribute to departmental service needs.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. (or earned by August 2027) in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline. Applicants should demonstrate potential for high-quality research, securing competitive research funding, generating high-quality publications, teaching a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, and providing appropriate service to the department, university, and profession. Successful candidates will demonstrate collaborative and interdisciplinary synergy with existing research strengths on-campus and have excellent communication skills.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.


Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited institution of higher education, conferred by the start of employment

  • Demonstrated research experience in one or more of the following areas:

    • Additive or hybrid manufacturing of metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, or multi-material or functional structure

    • Intelligent, autonomous, distributed, cooperative, or robot-assisted manufacturing, including in situ sensing and process control, computational design, digital twins, artificial intelligence, or scalable manufacturing system integration

  • Demonstrated record of high-quality research and peer-reviewed journal publications

  • Evidence of the potential to establish a collaborative, externally funded research program

 

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience in pursuing and obtaining research funding

  • Engagement in collaborative research

  • Experience teaching or supporting the teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses

  • Industry experience
