MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN - AIRPORT

Department: Community & Economic Development

Division: Airport

Pay Grade: GRADE 130: $52,387.03 - $75,961.19 Annual Salary ($25.19 - $36.52 Hourly Rate)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Merit, Full-Time, & Eligible for Benefits


GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs and leads skilled, semi-skilled, and general maintenance activities necessary to preserve, repair, and improve Airport facilities, buildings, infrastructure, and support systems at a Part 139 certificated airport. Responsibilities include the inspection, maintenance, repair, and operation of Airport-owned facilities including the passenger terminal, maintenance buildings, hangars, public parking areas, perimeter fencing, motorized vehicle gates, utilities, and other Airport infrastructure. The position also supports Airport Operations, commercial air service, tenant services, public access, emergency response, and customer service. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Airport Director and requires independent judgment in prioritizing work, responding to emergencies, and coordinating maintenance activities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Airport Facilities Maintenance

  • Maintains, repairs, and improves Airport-owned buildings, facilities, and infrastructure, including the passenger terminal, maintenance buildings, hangars, public parking areas, sidewalks, fencing, utilities, and other support facilities.
  • Performs preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance.
  • Inspects Airport facilities on a routine basis and identifies deficiencies requiring maintenance, repair, or replacement.
  • Maintains facility systems in a safe, clean, functional, and professional condition.

Terminal Building Operations

  • Maintains all public and operational areas of the passenger terminal.
  • Performs maintenance and janitorial service on doors, windows, lighting, plumbing, fixtures, and passenger amenities.
  • Supports airline operations through timely response to facility-related issues.

Building Systems Maintenance

  • Operates, inspects, troubleshoots, and maintains HVAC systems, electrical systems, plumbing systems, generators, fire protection systems, automatic doors, baggage carousel, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Coordinates specialized repairs with City facilities department or outside qualified contractors when required.
  • Maintains maintenance records and schedules for facility systems.

Gates, Fencing, and Access Control

  • Maintains motorized vehicle gates, pedestrian gates, perimeter fencing, locks, access control devices, and related infrastructure.
  • Coordinates repairs affecting Airport security and restricted access areas.
  • Ensures security systems remain functional and promptly reports deficiencies.

Equipment and Inventory Management

  • Operates and maintains maintenance vehicles, tools, equipment, and specialized maintenance equipment.
  • Maintains inventories of repair parts, supplies, and consumable materials.
  • Orders materials, obtaining quotations, and monitoring inventory levels.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintains maintenance logs, inspection reports, preventive maintenance schedules, and work order documentation.
  • Develops and revises facility maintenance plans, asset replacement schedules, and annual work programs.
  • Documents maintenance activities using Airport and City recordkeeping systems.
  • Assists in preparing cost estimates, budgets, and purchasing requests.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Perform required duties and airport inspections in accordance with FAA Part 139 requirements, TSA security requirements, OSHA regulations, environmental regulations, fire codes, City policies, and Airport Rules and Regulations.
  • Assists during FAA inspections, TSA inspections, fire inspections, and other regulatory audits.
  • Reports unsafe conditions and recommends corrective actions.

Customer Service and Professionalism

  • Provides courteous and professional service to Airport tenants, airlines, passengers, contractors, visitors, and the public.
  • Maintains positive working relationships with City departments, regulatory agencies, and Airport stakeholders.
  • Represents the Airport in a professional manner and supports the Airport's mission and operational goals.

General

  • Participate in safety and risk management activities; take action to reduce liability to the City.
  • Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position. Employee is required work as a team and frequently meet with co-workers and supervisor; employee is required to communicate in-person with the public during office hours; and employee is required to use on-site equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as required/assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible general facilities maintenance experience involving the inspection, repair, and maintenance of buildings, equipment, grounds, utilities, gates, parking areas, or related infrastructure.
  • Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, Utah driver's license within six months.
  • Employees will be required to complete NIMS IS100 and IS700 within three months of hire.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Building maintenance principles, practices, methods, and techniques.
  • Preventive and corrective maintenance of commercial and municipal facilities.
  • Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, painting, masonry, roofing, and general building repair.
  • Operation and maintenance of building mechanical systems, fire protection systems, generators, automatic doors, access control systems, and related facility infrastructure.
  • Safe operation and maintenance of hand tools, power tools, maintenance equipment, and motorized vehicles.
  • Maintenance planning, work order systems, preventive maintenance scheduling, and inventory control.
  • Applicable FAA Part 139 requirements affecting airport facilities and operations.
  • TSA security requirements related to airport access control and secure areas.
  • OSHA safety standards, building codes, fire codes, environmental regulations, and safe work practices.
  • Principles of customer service and professional interaction with tenants, airlines, contractors, regulatory agencies, and the public.

Skill in:

  • Inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining Airport facilities and infrastructure.
  • Operating maintenance vehicles, powered equipment, lifts, generators, and specialized maintenance tools safely and efficiently.
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, construction drawings, equipment manuals, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building system deficiencies.
  • Prioritizing multiple maintenance requests while maintaining operational continuity.
  • Coordinating maintenance activities with Airport Operations, commercial airlines, tenants, contractors, and City departments.
  • Maintaining accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, inventories, and work documentation.
  • Communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Ability to:

  • Maintain Airport facilities in a safe, clean, reliable, and professional condition.
  • Plan, organize, prioritize, and complete maintenance assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Exercise sound judgment and make appropriate decisions during routine operations and emergency situations.
  • Coordinate and oversee contractors performing maintenance or construction activities on Airport property.
  • Interpret and apply Airport policies, maintenance standards, safety procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, tenants, airline personnel, contractors, regulatory agencies, and the public.
  • Provide courteous and professional customer service while resolving maintenance-related concerns.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies, severe weather events, and operational incidents as required.
  • Work safely around aircraft operations, heavy equipment, vehicle traffic, and active construction projects.
  • Adapt to changing priorities while maintaining a high standard of workmanship, safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: walking or standing for extended periods of time and operating assigned equipment.
