This position is required to work in person at the Student Theatre Centre. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.

Position Overview

The City of Burlington is accepting applications for a Specialized Program Instructor, RCC – Dance & Choreography to support Fall/Winter/Spring Burlington Student Theatre programs for children aged 4-17 years.

Reporting to the Artistic Supervisor, Program & Theatre Services, this role is ideal for a passionate choreographer and dance instructor who enjoys working with youth performers in a collaborative, creative, and supportive environment.

This role is responsible for planning and delivering engaging choreography and dance instruction that develops participants' movement, dance and performance skills.  This role supports a variety of Burlington Student Theatre programs and productions, including mainstage shows at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre.

Working collaboratively with artistic program staff, directors, and support staff, this role fosters a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment while helping participants build confidence, performance skills, creativity, and stage presence throughout the rehearsal and performance process.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and facilitate rehearsals, workshops, classes, and performance activities that support the artistic and personal development of youth participants.

  • Guide participants in the development of dance skills, including improvisation, character development, storytelling, scene work, and performance techniques.

  • Prepare rehearsal parts, script breakdowns, and supplemental choreography as needed for participants.

  • Collaborate with creative team to plan and execute the creative vision of a variety of performances and productions.

  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all participants.

  • Support participants in developing performance skills, confidence, and teamwork.

  • Communicate effectively with families, staff, and City representatives as required.

  • Ensure all activities align with City policies, safety standards, and program expectations.

  • Escalate behavioural, safety, or wellbeing concerns as appropriate.

  • Successful applicants will assist in ensuring the safety and supervision of participants both on and offsite and are expected to implement and participate in activities. All staff must always adhere to all health and safety regulations.

  • Duties and responsibilities are inclusive but not limited to the above.

Requirements

  • Completion of a College Diploma in Dance, Performing Arts, Arts Education, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and professional experience will also be considered.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in dance instruction, choreography or musical theatre.

  • Experience working with children and/or youth in a recreational or educational setting.

  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and creating safe spaces for youth.

  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C certifications are required (or willingness to obtain).

  • High five certification is an asset.
