Why Lead Athenian Summer Programs?

At The Athenian School, learning extends far beyond the traditional academic year. Athenian Summer Programs (ASP) offer vibrant, mission-driven experiences where youth engage in collaborative, experiential, and fun summer learning on our stunning 75-acre campus at the base of Mt. Diablo.

We are seeking an innovative, entrepreneurial Director of Summer Programs to lead the vision, growth, and day-to-day execution of ASP. This unique year-round position offers the perfect balance for an experienced educator or camp director: high-energy on-campus leadership during the summer season, paired with flexible remote work and planning hours during the fall, winter, and spring.

Position Overview

The Director of Summer Programs provides strategic leadership, administrative oversight, and business management for Athenian Summer Programs. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director is responsible for program design, staff recruitment, registration management, financial stewardship, marketing, and safety protocols.

As the primary Administrator in Charge during summer operations, you will cultivate a safe, inclusive, and enriching environment for campers, families, and seasonal staff while maximizing ASP's revenue and community impact.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Program Design, Leadership & Summer Operations

  • Strategic Oversight: Lead the design, scheduling, and execution of a diverse portfolio of summer day camps, specialty camps, and residential offerings.

  • On-Campus Leadership: Serve as the primary Administrator in Charge during summer program operations, ensuring a well-run, safe, and engaging environment.

  • Entrepreneurial Growth: Identify opportunities to innovate, expand, and diversify program offerings based on enrollment data, family feedback, and community trends to support ASP’s financial sustainability.

  • Team Leadership: Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate seasonal camp directors, counselors, and support staff in accordance with Athenian standards.

  • Health & Safety: Maintain, review, and enforce comprehensive safety protocols, emergency procedures, and staff training (e.g., mandated reporting, CPR/AED, medical procedures).

  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Partner with Campus Facilities, Transportation, Dining Services, and security to ensure seamless logistics and resource sharing.

2. Marketing, Registration & Administration (Non-Summer / Flexible Months)

  • Platform & Data Management: Manage the online registration, payment, and invoicing systems in close collaboration with the Educational Technology team.

  • Enrollment Tracking: Maintain an annual dashboard tracking registration trends, revenue, and key metrics to inform business decisions.

  • Marketing & Outreach: Partner with the Communications team to create engaging digital and print marketing materials, website updates, flyers, and registration campaigns.

  • Customer Care: Serve as the primary contact for prospective and enrolled families, delivering exceptional communication and customer support.

  • Budgetary Management: Develop and manage the annual ASP budget, tracking revenue and expenses to meet organizational financial goals.

Core Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience: Demonstrated leadership in camp administration, summer school management, outdoor education, or youth program leadership.

  • Entrepreneurial Mindset: Proven ability to manage budgets, analyze enrollment metrics, and drive revenue through compelling program offerings.

  • Systems Savvy: Tech-comfortable with registration databases, payment software, and communication tools.

  • Staff Management: Strong background in recruiting, onboarding, and mentoring seasonal staff and youth counselors.

  • DEI & Community Focus: A strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and fostering a sense of belonging for diverse youth and families.

  • Certifications: Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications (or willingness to complete upon hire).

Compensation, Perks & Work Environment

  • Competitive Annual Salary: $50,000 – $65,000 (0.50 FTE across 12 months).

  • Work-Life Balance: Enjoy substantial Work-From-Home / Remote flexibility during the off-season (Fall, Winter, and Spring).

  • Campus Perks: Complimentary chef-prepared meals during summer working shifts.

  • Athletic Access: Full access to Athenian’s premier campus facilities, including a fitness center, gym, and swimming pool.

  • Professional Network: Opportunities for school-wide professional development, conference participation, and networking within the independent school community.
