What We're Looking For:

The purpose of this internship is to prepare students for entry into the business world by providing a thorough understanding of the various functions of the Zebra Technologies organization. The program is designed to provide students with experiences that provide insights into a career with Zebra. Students will be positioned for success with training and hands-on experiences, invited to social and development activities, and provided a professional mentor relationship.

Engineering Customer Response Team (ECRT) is the sustaining engineering organization within Zebra's Enterprise Mobile Computing (EMC) division, and we are part of the mechanical group. We resolve customer and field-related issues, implement manufacturing and design improvements, and lead cost-reduction efforts and factory location transitions to keep products reliable and cost-effective throughout their lifecycle.

US Summer Internship Benefits:
Summer Fridays, As Applicable With Your Team
30+ Social and Professional Events in 12 Weeks
Global Immersion With Your Teams and Interns
Intern Allowance (when applicable)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Automate the generation of mechanical design requirements using AI to enhance efficiency and quality
  • Develop a tool to use AI to automatically cross-reference Joint Design Manufacturer (JDM) part drawing notes with Zebra Standards, streamlining compliance checks
  • Establish a foundation for future LLM applications in generating functional mechanical design requirements, leveraging existing Zebra documentation and best practices
  • Develop planning, organizational and leadership skills
  • Increase technology knowledge and skills, especially as it relates to Zebra's product portfolio
  • Manage team-based work assignments
  • Practice interpersonal skills to connect with day-to-day business contacts through follow-up activities

This position requires hybrid work (3 days/week in office) in the Holtsville, NY office.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate degree program in Mechanical Engineering
  • Must have an anticipated graduation date in 2029
  • Must be authorized to work in the US without requiring sponsorship now or in the future

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic programming experience, preferably Python. Coursework or personal projects are enough. The intern will build the cross-referencing tool and needs to be comfortable reading, writing, and debugging code
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development and LLM tools. This means experience with tools like Claude, ChatGPT, or GitHub Copilot, and a basic grasp of prompting and how LLMs handle documents. It covers the AI-driven tool and automation work
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and technical documents. The intern doesn't need deep mechanical expertise. Introductory exposure to engineering graphics, CAD, or GD&T is enough to follow drawing notes and standards. They will use this to compare JDM part drawing notes against Zebra Standards
  • Communication Skills – Clear and effective verbal and written communication
  • Adaptability and Learning Agility – Willingness to learn quickly, embrace new tools or methods, and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Technical Skills – Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and basic familiarity with technology solutions
  • Integrity – Commitment to ethical behavior and confidentiality
