Status: Full-time, FLSA Non-Exempt, Union-eligible

The City of The Dalles Police Department is seeking motivated, community‑oriented individuals to join our team as Patrol Officers. If you are committed to public service, integrity, and building strong community relationships, we encourage you to apply for this exciting career opportunity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Uphold and promote the department's mission, values, and directives through consistent professional conduct and decision‑making.
  • Perform all assigned duties safely, efficiently, and effectively, demonstrating sound judgment and self‑initiative.
  • Maintain personal conduct-on and off duty-in a manner that sustains public trust and confidence in the department.
  • Work independently for extended periods with minimal direct supervision while exercising strong problem‑solving skills.
  • Perform general law enforcement duties including responding to calls for service, patrolling, investigating complaints and crimes, conducting follow‑up, writing reports, and testifying credibly in court.
  • Manage emergencies, protect people and property, secure and monitor prisoners, and operate vehicles and equipment safely.
  • Use self‑directed work efficiently when not responding to calls by prioritizing tasks identified by supervisory personnel.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, including temporarily assuming additional duties when necessary.

What You Bring

  • Commitment to community‑oriented policing
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Sound judgment, ethical decision‑making, and effective problem‑solving
  • Professionalism and integrity
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws and policies
  • Ability to remain calm in high‑pressure situations
  • Ability to safely operate police vehicles and equipment
  • Commitment to teamwork and exceptional public service

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least 21 years of age by the time of hire
  • Ability to meet all DPSST (Department of Public Safety Standards and Training) requirements for a Basic Police Officer certification
  • Ability to testify in court with credibility and integrity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Field Training Officer (FTO) experience
  • Spanish language proficiency (written and verbal)
  • Prior experience in public safety, customer service, or community service

Benefits

The City offers a competitive benefits package that includes:

  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and HRA-VEBA.
  • Long-term disability and accidental death and dismemberment insurance.
  • Employee Assistance Program.
  • City-paid retirement contributions of 22.6% after one year of service.

Working Conditions

Work is primarily performed outdoors and from a patrol vehicle, with conditions varying by shift. Officers must lift, push, pull, or carry heavy loads-over 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly. Physical mobility is required for frequent vehicle entry and exit, building inspections, climbing obstacles, and rapid response to hazards.

Mental alertness is essential for quick decision‑making, recognizing subtle danger cues, and identifying inconsistencies in statements. Physical and mental demands can change within seconds and require sustained endurance. Officers must maintain continuous physical and mental readiness to safely manage encounters with dangerous or potentially dangerous individuals, animals, and equipment, often with limited backup and minimal force.

This position requires varied shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Required Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • CPR and First Aid certification (training provided)
  • Must successfully pass all required background checks, psychological evaluations, medical exams, and drug screening
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

  • Answer the supplemental questions.

No background or drug test will be initiated until a signed tentative offer letter has been received. The final candidate selected for this position is subject to pre-employment criminal history background check and pre-employment drug testing. Only criminal history that would place an undue risk on the City or community will prohibit a candidate from being hired. This position is either classified as safety sensitive or requires a Commercial Driver's License. The final candidate is subject to pre-employment drug testing. A positive drug test, including for marijuana, is grounds for rescinding a job offer. The person hired for this position will also be subject to random drug testing.
