POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Patrol Officer
City of The Dalles Police Department
Department: Police Department
Compensation: $80,609.37 - $96,251.80 annually
Status: Full-time, FLSA Non-Exempt, Union-eligible

- Perform general law enforcement duties including responding to calls for service, patrolling, investigating complaints and crimes, conducting follow‑up, writing reports, and testifying credibly in court.
- Manage emergencies, protect people and property, secure and monitor prisoners, and operate vehicles and equipment safely.
- Use self‑directed work efficiently when not responding to calls by prioritizing tasks identified by supervisory personnel.
- Perform other related duties as assigned, including temporarily assuming additional duties when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- At least 21 years of age by the time of hire
- Ability to meet all DPSST (Department of Public Safety Standards and Training) requirements for a Basic Police Officer certification
- Ability to testify in court with credibility and integrity
Preferred Qualifications
- Field Training Officer (FTO) experience
- Spanish language proficiency (written and verbal)

Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed outdoors and from a patrol vehicle, with conditions varying by shift. Officers must lift, push, pull, or carry heavy loads-over 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly. Physical mobility is required for frequent vehicle entry and exit, building inspections, climbing obstacles, and rapid response to hazards.
Mental alertness is essential for quick decision‑making, recognizing subtle danger cues, and identifying inconsistencies in statements. Physical and mental demands can change within seconds and require sustained endurance. Officers must maintain continuous physical and mental readiness to safely manage encounters with dangerous or potentially dangerous individuals, animals, and equipment, often with limited backup and minimal force.
Required Licenses & Certifications
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- CPR and First Aid certification (training provided)
- Must successfully pass all required background checks, psychological evaluations, medical exams, and drug screening
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
