Job Description
The Staff Accountant possesses well-rounded accounting experience, strong analytical skills, and general ledger knowledge. This position performs detailed general ledger accounting functions and analysis for specified areas of the Company’s retail and related businesses, with significant responsibility for sales and use tax reconciliation, tax rate maintenance, tax code updates, and business licensing support across the various entities and jurisdictions within the ownership structure. The Staff Accountant also supports the month-end close and reporting process, assists with reconciliations and variance analysis, helps streamline procedures, and contributes to SOX and GAAP internal control compliance.
Responsibilities
- Prepare monthly detailed reconciliations and account analysis, including sales and use tax reconciliations
- Manage sales and use tax accounting activities across multiple businesses, entities, and jurisdictions within the ownership structure
- Maintain, review, and update sales and use tax rates, tax codes, and related system settings to support accurate transaction processing and reporting
- Support business license compliance by helping ensure the Company has the proper licenses, registrations, and documentation needed to operate in applicable jurisdictions
- Maintain proper Secretary of State filings and manage relationships with key partners to support ongoing state compliance requirements
- Maintain and close the general ledger monthly
- Analyze activity and prepare journal entries, accruals, and supporting documentation
- Prepare monthly income statements, expense reporting, and related financial schedules
- Accumulate, review, and analyze monthly financial results and prepare variance analysis, as appropriate or requested
- Partner with operating departments to perform close activities and understand key drivers of results
- Assist in the design of process improvements, best practices, and controls related to accounting, tax, and reporting processes
- Maintain and review documented procedures and ensure compliance with SOX and GAAP requirements
- Assist in the accumulation and preparation of the monthly financial reporting package containing information required for external annual audits
- Assist with the audit process by completing requested schedules and partnering closely with external auditors
- Assist with ad-hoc assignments and special projects

- 1-2 years of general accounting experience required, preferably with exposure to monthly close, account reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Experience with sales and use tax accounting, multi-jurisdiction compliance, tax code maintenance, or business licensing is preferred
- A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field is preferred; equivalent experience will be considered
- ERP systems experience, including NetSuite, is preferred. Retail, wholesale, or multi-entity business experience is preferred
