Description
Primary Care Physician with a Focus in Women’s Health
High Lakes Health Care | Bend, Oregon
High Lakes Health Care, part of Praxis Health, is seeking a Family Medicine or Internal Medicine physician (MD/DO) who wants to build a full-spectrum primary care practice while bringing additional experience, knowledge, and interest in women’s health.
This is a primary care position—not a gynecology position.
The physician joining our team will serve as a primary care provider first, developing and managing a traditional primary care panel and caring for the broad range of health needs that come through a primary care practice. Depending on specialty training, that may include children and adolescents, adult men and women, older adults, preventive care, acute concerns, chronic disease management, behavioral health, and coordination of specialty care.
At the same time, we know there is significant demand among women in Central Oregon for a primary care physician who understands the health issues that affect them throughout different stages of life. In particular, many women are looking to their PCP for knowledgeable, evidence-based care during perimenopause and menopause and want a physician who is comfortable discussing these issues as part of their overall health—not separately from it.
We are looking for a physician who shares that interest and sees women’s health as an important part of excellent primary care.
The Practice
This physician will build and manage a full-spectrum primary care panel, with the opportunity to develop a particular area of clinical focus in women’s health.
Primary care responsibilities include:
- Preventive care, annual wellness visits, and age-appropriate screenings
- Evaluation and treatment of acute illness and injury
- Diagnosis and ongoing management of chronic medical conditions
- Medication management
- Behavioral and mental health care within the primary care setting
- Health counseling, risk-factor modification, and preventive medicine
- Coordination of care with specialists and other members of the patient's care team
- Care across the lifespan consistent with the physician's Family Medicine or Internal Medicine training
Within that broader primary care practice, the physician will also have the opportunity to provide additional depth in areas of women’s health such as:
- Perimenopause and menopause evaluation and management
- Evidence-based discussion and management of menopausal hormone therapy when clinically appropriate
- Contraceptive counseling and management
- Menstrual and other common women's health concerns routinely managed in primary care
- Preventive women's health and recommended screenings
- Sexual health and reproductive health counseling
- Other office-based women's health services consistent with the physician's training, experience, and desired scope of practice
The exact scope can be shaped around the physician's training and clinical interests. We are not recruiting someone to provide specialty gynecologic care, perform gynecologic surgery, or function as a gynecologist.
A Strong Partnership with High Lakes Gynecology
One of the advantages of this position is the ability to provide an expanded scope of women's health within primary care while practicing alongside an established High Lakes Gynecology team.
Our gynecologists are available for consultation and specialty referral when a patient's needs extend beyond the scope of primary care. This allows the primary care physician to maintain continuity for the health concerns appropriately managed in their practice while giving patients a clear pathway to specialty gynecologic or surgical care when needed.
The goal is not to duplicate gynecology. It is to provide women with a PCP who is particularly knowledgeable and comfortable caring for the health issues that often arise throughout adulthood while still managing the whole patient.
The Physician We Hope to Meet
We are interested in physicians who are passionate about primary care and who have developed—or want to further develop—an area of expertise in women's health.
Qualifications include:
- MD or DO degree
- Board certified or board eligible in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine
- Completion of an accredited Family Medicine or Internal Medicine residency
- Eligible for an unrestricted Oregon medical license
- Strong foundation in comprehensive outpatient primary care
- Experience, additional training, or demonstrated clinical interest in women's health
- Particular interest in the care of women during perimenopause and menopause
- Comfort providing evidence-based menopause management, including hormone therapy when appropriate
- Commitment to maintaining a broad primary care practice rather than a women's-health-only panel
Additional training or focused clinical experience in women's health, menopause medicine, or a women's health-focused primary care program is welcomed but not required.
