Summary:

Biogen is seeking an experienced, strategic, and highly collaborative commercial leader for the role of National Sales Director, Hematology (PNH), within the US EMPAVELI Franchise. This role is responsible for leading a national field sales team of 12 Account Managers focused on PNH and for translating brand strategy into disciplined, high-impact field execution in a competitive rare disease market.
The National Sales Director will be accountable for delivering sales performance, advancing market penetration and share growth, building a strong and inclusive team culture aligned with Biogen values, and ensuring the sales organization has the enablement, infrastructure, coaching, and cross-functional alignment required to meet customer needs and exceed business goals.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provide strong national leadership to the PNH Account Manager team, ensuring clear priorities, disciplined execution, and consistent focus on market penetration, share growth, and achievement of sales goals.
  • Translate commercial and brand strategy into effective field-level execution through local business planning, performance management, customer engagement priorities, and resource deployment.
  • Rigorously monitor performance against key metrics, identify opportunities to accelerate impact, conduct business reviews and deep dives as needed, and adjust plans in partnership with analytics, marketing, and other cross-functional partners.
  • Build, coach, and develop a high-performing team of 12 Account Managers, with a strong emphasis on talent development, accountability, engagement, and retention.
  • Establish and sustain a strong team culture rooted in Biogen values, with an emphasis on collaboration, care, excellence, ethical decision-making, resilience, and a growth mindset.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key external customers and practices, while ensuring front-line insights, customer needs, and market dynamics are surfaced to leadership in a timely and actionable manner.
  • Partner closely with marketing, market access, medical, training, analytics, commercial operations, and other internal stakeholders to ensure the field team has the tools, infrastructure, resources, and support needed to execute effectively.
  • Provide marketplace feedback to senior leadership on customer trends, hematology/oncology practice dynamics, competitive programs, access considerations, and industry issues that may impact brand performance.
  • Manage sales budget and strategic spend thoughtfully, ensuring resources are deployed efficiently and in alignment with business priorities.
  • Identify innovative approaches to sales leadership and field execution, thinking beyond traditional pharmaceutical models to help the team succeed in a challenging, competitive rare disease environment.
  • Ensure compliance with all Biogen policies and all applicable governmental laws, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Participate in or lead additional projects as assigned by the Vice President, Head of US EMPAVELI Franchise, including contributions to national meetings, learning plans, field enablement initiatives, and cross-functional business priorities.

Education

  • BA/BS degree required; advanced degree preferred.

Experience

  • 10+ years of progressive biotech/pharmaceutical commercial experience, including robust experience leading successful sales teams.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of front-line commercial management experience, such as Sales, Marketing, Thought Leader Liaison, Strategic Accounts, or related commercial leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead field teams through product launch, growth, market expansion, or competitive execution environments.
  • Experience in rare disease, hematology/oncology, PNH, complement-mediated diseases, or specialty biologics is strongly preferred.
  • Proven success collaborating with cross-functional commercial partners and influencing at senior levels without relying solely on formal authority.

  • High integrity and strong understanding of applicable compliance expectations, industry rules, and regulations within the pharmaceutical sector.
  • Resilience and adaptability in a fast-paced, data-driven, and results-oriented environment.

Travel Requirements

  • Willingness to travel domestically up to 75% of the time and attend occasional evening or weekend events, as business needs require.

Pay Information:

Base salary for this role will consider multiple factors, including but not limited to, candidate qualifications, relevant expertise, specialized skills, and industry experience in complement-targeted therapies. The targeted base salary range for this position is $210,000-$289,000. This range represents the base salary only and reflects Apellis' commitment to competitive compensation within the biopharmaceutical industry. The final salary offered may vary based on individual qualifications, business needs, and current market conditions.
