GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 

The purpose of this position is to enforce all local, federal, and state laws relating to the public’s safety and welfare in the County. Conduct vehicular patrols in designated County areas; maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems in the neighborhood, and respond to emergency service calls. In addition, the Deputy will work with local organizations, business and property owners, in relation to the homeless population in Oconee County.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: 

  1. Work with local organizations to assist the homeless population in Oconee.
  2. Work with Mental Health and OARS for mental health and addiction programs with the homeless population.
  3. Develop and maintain a database on the homeless population in Oconee.
  4. Identify and work with property owners on homeless encampments in Oconee.
  5. Work with the homeless population to reconnect with family when needed.
  6. Work with landowners on littering and trespassing issues involving the homeless population.
  7. Work with local businesses to deter loitering and solicitation.
  8. Respond to service calls regarding criminal and illegal activities.
  9. Patrol assigned areas in deterring criminal activities.
  10. Investigate criminal cases.
  11. Respond to alarm calls from business and residents in the County.
  12. Serve legal documents and warrants as required.
  13. Transport mentally-challenged patients to various facilities.
  14. Assist motorists with vehicle issues.
  15. Attend training classes for certifications and officer safety standards.
  16. Prepare various reports.
  17. Provide assistance to other agencies as required.
  18. Prepare for and attend court hearings and trials.

Essential Job Duties are intended to be examples of duties and are not intended to be all inclusive. There will be other duties as assigned.


Additional duties include:

Testify in court for felonies and misdemeanor cases in the General Sessions & magistrate level. Ensure proper recording of evidence collected from crime scenes. Continue training throughout the year. 

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

Knowledge of South Carolina Code of Laws;

Knowledge of policies and procedures of the Oconee County Sheriff's Office;

Basic computer and radio communication skills;

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;

Qualified to operate various assigned weapons;

Ability to work extended hours and remain on-call for duties;

Physical and mental abilities for known law enforcement work and in apprehending suspects;

Knowledge of County roadways and communities;

Customer service and interpersonal skills;


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

The educational requirement for this position is: High school diploma and 12 week academy.

Education may not be substituted for experience.

Related-experience required: No experience required.

Experience may not be substituted for education.


LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS: 

Certifications, licenses, professional designations, or other qualifications required for this position include: Completion of SC Criminal Justice Academy

Certifications, licenses, professional designations, or other qualifications preferred for this position include: Valid SC Driver’s License
