Coordinator, Operations & Safety (Engineering Student Project Teams)

• Full time fixed term for 18 months at Camperdown Campus

• Base Salary $117,133 - $127,610 + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

The Faculty of Engineering is seeking a Coordinator, Operations & Safety (Engineering Student Project Teams) to lead the operational coordination, compliance, and safety of student-led engineering project teams and co-curricular activities.

In this role you will support a portfolio of high-performing teams including the USYD Rocketry Team, Sydney Motorsport, Sydney UAV Engineering, Sydney Interplanetary Rover Initiative (SIRI), Sydney UAV Engineering (SUAVE) and Sydney Agriculture Robotics Association (SARA), with additional teams expected to join over time. You will play a pivotal role in fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and operational excellence while enabling students to successfully deliver innovative projects and compete at national and international levels.

Working within Education (Student Success) and closely aligned with Technical Support Services (TSS), you will collaborate with student leaders, academic staff, WHS advisors, and industry-facing teams to ensure effective coordination across stakeholders, facilities, and activities.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

• coordinate operations of engineering student project teams and associated workshops

• oversee utilisation, organisation, and continuous improvement of project team environments in collaboration with engineering schools and TSS

• support project delivery, timelines, and competition preparation activities across multiple student teams

• maintain a safe working environment across all project teams, lab and field activities in alignment with University WHS policies and legislative requirements

• develop, implement, and continuously improve safety procedures, inductions, and risk management processes

• deliver safety training, coordinate risk assessments, and monitor hazard and incident reporting activities

• ensure safe operation and appropriate use of tools, equipment, and facilities

• coordinate procurement, materials, resource management, budget management and reporting in collaboration with academic leads and TSS

• support industry engagement, sponsorship coordination, and external partnership activities

• build strong stakeholder relationships and foster a collaborative, safety-focused culture

• work closely with the broader Student Life and Outreach teams to identify and coordinate opportunities for project teams to participate in faculty events, outreach and engagement activities, supporting key faculty priorities, enhancing and showcasing the student experience. contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and broader faculty operational priorities

About you

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of training and experience

• demonstrated experience in operational coordination or administration within a complex environment, ideally within a tertiary institution

• strong working knowledge of WHS legislation, policies, and best practices within laboratory or workshop environments

• working knowledge of workshop tools and equipment desirable

• proven ability to coordinate multiple stakeholders and manage competing priorities across complex projects

• experience in risk management, compliance monitoring, and safety systems implementation

• financial and procurement experience, including budget management

• excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and build collaborative relationships

• strong organisational and time management skills with a high level of attention to detail

• customer-focused approach with the ability to support student-led initiatives effectively

Work Rights
