Golf Course Assistant Superintendent
Position Summary
The Golf Course Assistant Superintendent supports the Golf Course Superintendent in the daily maintenance and management of the golf course, grounds, irrigation systems, equipment, and landscape areas. This position helps ensure that the course is maintained to a high standard of playability, appearance, and environmental stewardship.
Essential Responsibilities
- Assist the Golf Course Superintendent with daily golf course maintenance and agronomic operations.
- Supervise and direct maintenance staff during assigned shifts and projects.
- Plan and execute mowing, trimming, edging, aeration, topdressing, fertilization, and other turf-management practices.
- Monitor turf conditions, irrigation needs, pests, diseases, and overall course health.
- Assist with the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of irrigation systems.
- Help calibrate and safely operate chemical and fertilizer application equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of chemical applications, maintenance activities, weather conditions, and equipment use.
- Assist with scheduling and prioritizing daily maintenance activities based on course conditions and golf schedules.
- Inspect and maintain turf, bunkers, tees, fairways, greens, roughs, landscaping, and other course areas.
- Assist with equipment maintenance and ensure machinery is properly cleaned, serviced, and stored.
- Train, supervise, and provide direction to seasonal and full-time maintenance employees.
- Promote safe work practices and ensure compliance with applicable OSHA, pesticide, environmental, and workplace regulations.
- Assist with special projects, course improvements, construction, drainage, landscaping, and renovation work.
- Communicate effectively with the Golf Course Superintendent, golf professional staff, management, and other departments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Previous golf course maintenance or turf-management experience preferred.
- Associate degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field preferred.
- Strong knowledge of turfgrass maintenance, irrigation, fertilizers, pesticides, and cultural practices.
- Experience operating and maintaining golf course maintenance equipment.
- Ability to supervise, motivate, and work effectively with a diverse maintenance team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in changing weather and course conditions.
- Valid driver's license required.
- State pesticide applicator certification, or the ability to obtain certification, preferred/required depending on location.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in heat, humidity, rain, and other weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, climb, and operate equipment for extended periods.
- Ability to work early mornings, weekends, holidays, and varying schedules as required by golf course operations.
