The Dean of Students Office at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks an Associate Dean of Students.

Job Details:

The Dean of Students Office at UW-Whitewater is committed to creating opportunities for student success and well-being and takes a challenging and supportive educational approach to the development of the whole student. We support and care for every Warhawk.


The Associate Dean of Students is responsible for providing exemplary leadership and oversight to student issues that are primarily related to student assistance and intervention. The Associate Dean serves as the chair of the CARE team.

This is a full-time, annual appointment; the position reports to the Dean of Students-working closely with the Well-being units which include University Health and Counseling Services and Center for Students with Disabilities, Residence Life, university Police, Academic Affairs and community partners to coordinate care for impacted students.

Responsibilities:

Student Assistance, Intervention and Crisis Response

  • Serve as the primary point of contact in the Dean of Students Office for non-conduct related issues and matters (ombuds, medical withdrawals, etc.). Provide leadership for development, implementation and administration of policies, procedures and protocols that impact student success and are under the purview of the Dean of Students Office.

  • Supervise professional staff and graduate student(s) in Dean of Students office

  • Serve as a Title IX Deputy in issues of sexual misconduct and harassment. 

  • Coordinate the Medical Withdrawal process

  • Ensure accurate records management and follow up for student complaints received by Associate Dean.

  • Serve in an ombudsman and advocacy role for students needing assistance in navigating campus policies or difficult situations.

  • Communicate and coordinate with faculty and staff members regarding students of concern. 

  • Document important contacts and conversations in appropriate data management systems.

CARE Team Leadership & Management

  • Serve as chairperson of the cross-functional CARE Team and ensure compliance with all requirements of the protocols of the team.

  • Oversee a case-management role to engage students of concern, reinforce behavioral expectations, and support follow-through with interventions recommended by CARE team.

  • Provide and promote training and on-going education as required and needed for CARE team members.

  • Maintain accurate CARE records and provide statistics and reports as needed or requested to appropriate entities.

  • Train members of the UW-Whitewater community on the role and function of the CARE team.

Division of Student Affairs

  • Work collaboratively with student affairs units, academic colleges, departments, and units to bridge multiple university agendas and priorities.

  • Serve on university and professional committees to advance the needs of students and staff with disabilities’ initiatives at the institutional level.

  • Other duties as assigned to support Dean of Students, Student Affairs and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. 

CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT:

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and Ombud's services
  • Advises students in crisis and develops protocols for meeting student needs
  • Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • Assists in advising institutional and divisional leadership on policy and procedures
  • Serves as the unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups, representing the interests of the division, in the absence of the Dean
  • Assists in the evaluation of unit program and service effectiveness, and provides recommendations for improvement
  • Serves as the subject matter expert to unit leadership regarding student issues and resolutions
  • Assists in the development of Student Services strategic planning initiatives and objectives to ensure appropriate use of financial, administrative and staffing resources, and alignment with the divisional strategic plan
  • Assists in the development of operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and division objectives

Compensation:

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary of $100,917.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel Administration, Counseling, or another related field. 

  • Seven years of relevant higher education related experience.

  • Experience managing student crisis situations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in behavior intervention and threat assessment processes and protocols.

  • Supervision experience of professional staff members.

  • Demonstrated competence in providing quality training programs for various levels of staff and students, especially as it relates to student behavior, classroom management and crisis response.

  • Policy development and implementation.

  • Well-developed communication and public relations skills including the ability to engage effectively with faculty, students, families, and their representatives.

  • Demonstrated intercultural competence and the impact on the student experience.

  • Knowledge and utilization of software programs that manage student contact and intervention processes. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to interact respectfully with people with diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds

  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills.
