Description of Work
Please note that all positions close at 12:00 AM on the posted closing date. You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date.Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of bridges, pipes, and culverts in Madison County. Work will consist of a wide variety of functional areas including, but not limited to carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, installing and maintaining erosion control devices, and repair/replacement of culverts, bridges, large diameter pipe, bulkheads, and pile clusters. Additional duties include sandblasting, lead paint removal, painting, steel fabrication, trenching and shoring, and vegetation removal. Employees hired in this position will be expected to operate assigned equipment safely and possess knowledge of use and care of assigned equipment, hand tools and power tools; follow oral/written instructions as directed by supervisor; perform work zone operations; and assist with snow and ice operations. Work may include lifting 50 lbs. repeatedly and exerting up 100lbs of force occasionally and may be performed while suspended at moderate heights, confined areas, or above water/in water. Employees must have the ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Position is subject to emergency callback.
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Release forms ALCDRG-01 and ALCDRG-06 must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol. Safety toe footwear required.

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC05 - $33,902.00 - $59,327.00
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Experience in pipe installation and installation of erosion control devices.
- Experience in the layout of traffic control in work zones.
- Working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedures.
- Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following: air compressor, backhoe, dump truck. Forklift, front end loader, tractor trailer, or vibrator roller compactor.
Minimum Education and Experience

Minimum Education and Experience of Requirement:
High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
