Location & Schedule

The City and County of Denver utilizes a hybrid model workplace that balances the responsibilities of public service with the benefits of a flexible work environment. Employees work where needed, at a city site and/or in the community several days a week.  In this position you can expect to work on site, three (3) days a week at: Wellington E. Webb Building – 201 W Colfax Ave., Denver, CO 80202.

The Right of Way Services – Engineering Plan Review Wastewater is currently hiring a Staff Engineer.  This position is part of an eight-person team working with private engineers, project managers, inspectors, and City agency partners.  Our team focuses on guiding and permitting a wide variety of public and private wastewater infrastructure designs for development projects.

Specifically, as the Staff Engineer you will:

  • Help review storm and sanitary infrastructure plans for conformance with City technical design criteria and standards.
  • Help coordinate stakeholder interactions. 
  • Assist and ensure the private development design teams conform to criteria and standards.
  • Coordinate with entities both inside and outside the City through the multi-agency review process.
  • Assist senior staff with various engineering review duties. 
  • Perform entry-level engineering work on small routine projects or parts of large projects under the direction of a licensed engineer.
  • Learn the processes, practices, and applications of design and the principles, standards, requirements, and guidelines for plans review. Train and assist in the preparation of design reviews.
  • Train and become proficient in reviewing Storm and Sanitary Sewer construction plans and supporting drainage and sanitary sewer studies for conformance with City criteria and standards.
  • Train and assist with the review of Construction Activities Stormwater Discharge Plans and report (aka Erosion Control Plans).
  • Train and assist in the review of complex stormwater detention and water quality treatment facilities with the support of senior staff.
  • Meet with site development personnel, engineering consultants, and other city agency staff to resolve problems and concerns and answer questions on non-controversial issues/projects. 
  • Perform increasingly more responsible work as the employee gains experience and independently performs engineering duties.

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • A degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in water resources.
  • Some engineer experience working on heavy civil construction projects or design internships or positions. Some experience working on storm, sanitary, and water quality projects with the City and County of Denver, equivalent municipality, or with a private consultant.
  • Additional background in multi-disciplinary projects is highly desirable: roadway improvements, signal reconstruction, bike lanes, multiuse paths, grading/erosion control and utility relocations. 
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills which strengthen relationships with inspectors, consultants, City agency partners, residents, business owners, neighborhood organizations and elected officials. 
  • Computer skills should include MS Office, ArcMap, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Excel.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.
  • Experience Requirement: None.
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
  • License/Certifications: Certification as an Engineer Intern (EI) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) by successfully completing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) issued by a State licensing Board by the end of probation. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
