Job Description:
Smart people. Smart ideas. Smart choice.
MTS is a leading global supplier of test and simulation systems. Formula 1 teams, leading automotive and aerospace companies, and the world's top researchers in materials and seismic engineering all rely on our systems to determine product reliability and ensure compliance with quality standards. As an ITW company, MTS is part of a Fortune 300 global manufacturing leader with 49,000 employees across 56 countries, offering career development opportunities not just within MTS but across the ITW enterprise.
We're looking for a Systems Engineer II who will deliver world-class high-performance power systems, test systems, and motion simulators that drive product innovations across automotive, aerospace, and motorsports markets. This role sits at the intersection of systems engineering and project engineering: the person in this seat partners with a Technology & Market Manager to take a new product concept from market opportunity to fielded system, leading the technical team through requirements, architecture, and execution along the way.
For example, on a hybrid simulation program, this person would work with the Technology & Market Manager to understand customer and market requirements, then bring together the relevant engineering teams to translate those requirements into system-level requirements, drive allocation of those requirements down to the sub-system level, and work with subject matter experts to define architecture and identify and manage technical risk, all while driving the schedule and execution of the project.
This is a Systems Engineer II or III position (level based on experience). It is an individual-contributor technical leadership role: the person will lead cross-functional technical discussions and drive execution, without direct people-management responsibility.
Major Areas of Accountability:
- Partner with the Technology & Market Manager to understand customer and market requirements for new products and translate them into clear engineering requirements.
- Bring together the relevant engineering teams and subject matter experts to lead discussions on system requirements, architecture, and design trade-offs for new product development programs.
- Own the system requirements for assigned programs, and drive the allocation of those requirements down to the sub-system level in collaboration with the engineering team.
- Work with subject matter experts across disciplines (controls, electrical, mechanical, hydraulics, software) to define system architecture options and assess technical risk and feasibility.
- Maintain a technical risk registry for assigned programs, and drive mitigation actions to protect schedule, cost, and performance.
- Drive execution of the project end-to-end, coordinating across engineering, the Technology & Market Manager, and other stakeholders to keep the program on schedule and aligned to requirements.
- Support proposal development for new opportunities, including technical scope, specifications, and input to schedule and cost estimates.
- Conduct or coordinate design reviews to validate that system and sub-system designs meet requirements before proceeding to the next phase.
- Determine and control system interfaces between sub-systems to ensure intended operation and interoperability.
- Guide the team through the validation process, confirming that system elements deliver the function intended before release or delivery to the customer.
- Build and maintain strong cross-functional communication among engineering, project management, and commercial teams throughout the product life cycle.
Best in Class Benefits:
- Affordable medical, dental, and vision insurance: http://myitwhr.com/
- HSA/FSA with a company match
- Income protection benefits
- Industry leading 401(k) plan
- Paid time off
- Parental leave
- Matching gift and volunteer program
