We are looking for a Principal Information Security Engineer (AI/Data Security Engineering & Insider Threat Mgmt) professional who will be responsible for leading and developing a team dedicated to establishing clear security guardrails and controls specifically targeted to the safe adoption and use of artificial intelligence (AI) within bp.  The role will also engineer similar controls related to data and information security, including data loss prevention (DLP) and data security posture management (DSPM).  In addition to these engineering specific accountabilities, this position will also be accountable for leading a team focused on the management of insider threats within bp.

 
You will provide leading insight of industry and technology trends and best practices to shape bp’s product agenda and create a culture of excellence.

Job Description:

Key Responsibilities

• Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams, specific to artificial intelligence (AI) and data practices.
• Lead the digital monitoring and investigation of insider threats, working closely with other teams, including but not limited to PC&C, ethics & compliance, and intelligence & security.
• Set clear expectations with individuals based on their level and role and aligned to the broader organization’s goals. Meet regularly with individuals to discuss performance and development and provide feedback and coaching.
• Model and ensure a high level of confidentiality – particularly as it relates to insider risk cases involving bp personnel.
• Create positive engagement and governance framework and drive an inclusive work environment with teams and collaborators including software engineers, developers, product owners, product managers and portfolio managers.
• Evolve the roadmap to meet anticipated future requirements and needs.
• Provide support to the AI development squads providing technical guidance, managing dependencies and risks.
• Set and implement AI and data standards, co-design schemas, ensure quality at the source, and find opportunities to automate manual secure processes wherever possible.
• Provide deep data and security domain knowledge and business context around securing applications and bp products.
• Work with business partners to implement secure product strategies and to coordinate remediation activities to ensure products meet business requirements, where appropriate.
• Present results to peers and senior management to influence decision making.
• Actively sponsor and mentor emerging talent and promote a culture of continuous development.

Qualifications

• Seasoned senior leadership professional with experience leading, growing and developing a security/software engineering team of around 30-150 people.
• Deep and hands-on experience designing, planning, productizing, maintaining and documenting reliable and scalable data infrastructure and data products in complex environments – including across all data lifecycle stages.
• Demonstrated, hands-on experience with AI security principles, architectures, and practices.
• Practical experience conducting forensic investigations of insider threat cases and a demonstrated ability to handle such cases professionally and confidentially.
• Experience in a technical leadership role, overseeing projects.
• Development experience in one or more object-oriented programming languages (e.g., Python, Scala, Java, C#)
• Strong collaborator management and ability to lead teams through managerial and technical influence.

Future Location Notice:  This role will start in Sunbury, London. bp has announced a planned office move to Timber Square, London, with all positions currently advertised in Sunbury, including this one, expected to relocate around Q4 2027-Q1 2028.
