Director of Safety

Solid Rock Recruiting | Confidential Search

Solid Rock Recruiting is partnering with an established organization to identify an experienced Director of Safety to lead its environmental health, safety, and workers’ compensation functions.

This individual will be responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing occupational health and safety policies, ensuring regulatory compliance, reducing workplace risks, and overseeing workers’ compensation processes. The ideal candidate brings extensive knowledge of OSHA regulations, environmental compliance, workplace injury prevention, and workers’ compensation, along with the leadership skills necessary to promote a strong safety culture across office, shop, and active field environments.

Essential Functions

Safety Management

  • Collaborate with leadership to develop, implement, and maintain safety policies and procedures.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local safety laws, regulations, codes, and standards.

  • Oversee OSHA recordkeeping, documentation, and required reporting.

  • Identify and stop operations or activities that present risks to employees, equipment, or property.

  • Identify opportunities to reduce workplace injuries, accidents, and occupational health risks.

  • Develop and conduct employee safety training based on applicable standards and job requirements.

  • Review safety training programs and recommend improvements, revisions, and updates.

  • Review accident and incident reports to identify root causes and corrective actions.

Environmental Health and Compliance

  • Conduct inspections to identify environmental, health, and workplace safety risks.

  • Prepare inspection reports documenting findings and recommended corrective actions.

  • Develop and maintain inspection policies, procedures, and routine inspection schedules.

  • Coordinate training covering emergency response, workplace safety, and other relevant environmental and health topics.

  • Ensure safety data sheets (SDS) are properly maintained and readily accessible.

  • Maintain required records regarding hazardous waste, pollutant discharges, and employee exposure to regulated substances.

Workers’ Compensation

  • Review workers’ compensation claim documentation and supporting records.

  • Evaluate injury reports to assess claims, compensation considerations, and anticipated claim costs.

  • Coordinate medical treatment, hospitalization, and surgical care in accordance with applicable laws and authorization procedures.

  • Evaluate permanent disability ratings and related documentation as applicable.

  • Coordinate the processing and payment of medical expenses, disability compensation, and death benefits in accordance with applicable requirements.

  • Maintain accurate claims records, files, and databases, and prepare reports summarizing claims activity and trends.

  • Provide employees and relevant stakeholders with information and training regarding workers’ compensation benefits and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, or a related field required. A master’s degree is preferred.

  • Ten or more years of relevant professional experience preferred.

  • Relevant certifications preferred, including EHS, OSHA, CESCO, ISO, and Train-the-Trainer credentials.

  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA standards, occupational safety practices, and regulatory compliance requirements.

  • Strong understanding of environmental regulations, policies, and compliance procedures.

  • Excellent analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Proficiency with technology and equipment used for environmental and safety inspections.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, ISNetworld, and other EHS and workers’ compensation software platforms.

  • Extensive knowledge of workers’ compensation laws, procedures, and applicable regulations.

  • Familiarity with medical and technical terminology used in workers’ compensation cases.

  • Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, and team-development skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and oversight to assigned personnel.

  • Conduct timely, constructive performance evaluations and support employee development.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Primarily office-based, with regular interaction with shop operations and active field job sites.

  • Regular travel to field locations is required, including work in varying weather conditions and construction environments.

  • Must be comfortable working at heights and capable of climbing structures exceeding 65 feet while following all applicable safety procedures.

  • Must be able to sit, squat, talk, hear, reach, handle objects, and operate tools or controls as required.

  • Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and walk as job duties require.

  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Must possess the vision capabilities necessary to perform essential job duties, including close, distance, peripheral, and color vision, as well as the ability to adjust focus.

  • Must be able to work at a sustained pace while maintaining accuracy, attention to detail, and quality standards.
