Altorfer, a leading Caterpillar dealer serving customers throughout Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri, is seeking a strategic and results-oriented Director of Safety & Risk Management. With approximately 1,400 employees and 38 locations, this leader is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving enterprise safety, operational risk, environmental compliance, loss prevention, and insurable risk programs that protect employees, customers, property, and Altorfer’s reputation.

This role provides strategic leadership across and partners closely with executive and operational leaders to reduce risk, strengthen accountability, and improve performance.
Basic Duties
- Safety Strategy: Lead enterprise safety strategy, promote a proactive safety culture, and strengthen leadership accountability.
- Risk Management: Identify and reduce safety, operational, environmental, fleet, property, regulatory, and reputational risk.
- Compliance: Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA, MSHA, and applicable state safety and environmental requirements.
- Insurance and Claims: Manage insurance programs, claims strategy, broker/carrier relationships, litigation trends, and return-to-work efforts.
- Incident Response: Lead serious-incident response, investigations, corrective actions, and executive risk escalation.
- Programs and Training: Oversee safety training, audits, emergency preparedness, driver safety, contractor safety, and compliance systems.
- Leadership and Partnership: Lead the safety team and advise executive and operational leaders on safety, risk, claims, facilities, and major projects.
- Financial and Performance Management: Manage budgets, evaluate risk-reduction investments, track key metrics, and drive timely corrective action.
- Perform other duties consistent with the scope and level of the position.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Risk Management, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Technology, Business, or related field required.
- Minimum seven years of progressive safety, environmental, insurance, claims, or operational risk leadership experience; ten or more years preferred.
- Experience leading multi-site operations, driving safety culture, and influencing leaders and employees across all levels of the organization.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA and risk management principles; DOT, EPA, MSHA, state requirements, and industrial hygiene experience preferred.
- Experience managing insurance programs, broker/carrier relationships, claims strategy, litigation trends, and return-to-work programs.
- Experience in heavy equipment, construction, industrial, manufacturing, transportation, rental, dealership, or similar field-based operations preferred.
- Professional certification such as CSP, ARM, CPCU, CIH, or CRIS preferred.
- Strong leadership, coaching, communication, analytical, organizational, and change-management skills.
- Ability to interpret regulations, prepare clear policies and reports, deliver executive-level presentations, and use data to guide decisions.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and relevant safety, claims, and compliance systems.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to satisfy Altorfer’s fleet eligibility requirements. This includes no more than 2 minor violations within the past 3 years and no major violations within the past 5 years (Motor Vehicle Report will be performed on final candidate)
Success Measures: Success will be measured by improved safety performance, reduced risk and claims costs, timely corrective-action closure, effective training and audit completion, stronger regulatory outcomes, consistent programs across locations, and development of a high-performing safety team.

This position works in office, branch, shop, warehouse, yard, customer-worksite, and field environments. Travel of approximately 30–40%, including overnight travel, is required. The role must be available outside normal business hours when serious incidents, regulatory matters, or business needs require leadership response.
The employee must be able to safely access and move through office, service, warehouse, yard, and jobsite environments and use required personal protective equipment, which may include safety glasses, safety footwear, gloves, hearing protection, and high-visibility apparel.
